Why It Matters

As we celebrate Black History Month, I’m reminded of the powerful role that sports play in shaping not just the bodies, but the minds and hearts of young people. Resilience is a trait that is cultivated through adversity, discipline, and a strong support system—qualities that sports bring to the forefront. At UDA, our programs, like the "Resilience Roadmap," are designed with this holistic approach in mind. We believe that the most effective way to nurture resilience in young people is through a combination of physical activities and emotional development. Whether it's through gymnastics, dance, or fencing, our students aren’t just learning new skills—they’re learning how to navigate challenges, build self-confidence, and process their emotions in healthy ways. In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure world, it’s more important than ever to give young people the tools to overcome obstacles. Sports provide a unique platform to do just that. Through physical training, teamwork, and individual progress, young people gain the inner strength needed to thrive in all areas of their lives. At UDA, our mission is to raise aspirations and unlock the potential of every child we work with, particularly those from underrepresented communities. We wrapped off UK Black Business Week | UK Black Business Show, with some game changing sessions. Such a successful event! The event was packed, which is fantastic for Dr. Raphael Sofoluke and the sponsors, for obvious reasons but I would have loved a few things to be different. Last year was phenomenal, the space, the people the time we shared! Trust me I understand the ups and downs event organisers face so I must say well done to the entire team for successfully executing 2024. What I would have appreciated was more intimate moments with key speakers, giving participants a real opportunity to engage. When I network, I aim to build my net worth—not just through connections, but through meaningful, thought-provoking conversations that drive both growth and inspiration. At this stage in my career, events like the UK Black Business Show are essential, but it’s important for me to leave feeling truly fulfilled, having connected deeply with people who spark innovative ideas. It was a beautifully executed event, and I believe more than 80% of attendees left satisfied, reason why I think such shows are special. That said, I was happy to attend the sessions by Steven Bartlett and Afua Hirsch Sitting front row—something I’ve come to enjoy—I absorbed their insights. Though I didn’t get a chance to speak with them, I’m excited to spend the next three months implementing some of their recommended strategies for business growth. Next year will be different. I know I’ll be participating in a more impactful capacity!
