With all due respect, the authors are only identifying part of the problem. The bigger driver is that the child poverty rate in the US is nearly double that of the average of these comparator countries. In the US in particular, poverty is associated with allostatic load, the collective burden of negative experiences that imprint in early childhood development. Closing the gaps between the US and these other countries starts with the quality of childrearing and early education. That's not to say there are not significant issues on the part of the healthcare system, as the authors rightly point out.

Most issues that impact health are not associated with pathogens or a medical origin.
