Project Excellence Leader . Trainer & Mentor

Before you start working as a planning engineer, it is mandatory to have some years of hands on field experience, be it in construction, engineering or fabrication. Spend most of your time in the field or construction site, vendor shop, fabrication yard, consultant's office to understand the job and learn the execution, interfaces, quality requirements, inspections etc. This will help you to learn the following. 1) Visualising the job and its sequence of activities 2) Organising and contributing in review meetings 3) Listening and understanding the opinions and concerns from all team members 4) Asking questions from planning point of view 5) Trying to Integrate the activities of different disciplines and phases 6) Exploring the risks and hindrances for progress 7) Grasping the project dynamics, it is altogether different in the real world with real work and real people. 8) Realising the fact that often the preparation of the work is actually more critical than doing the work itself It is not easy and has its own challenges, but it is worth it, as all this experience and the exposure over the years increases your competence as a project controls engineer and leader. Do share your thoughts...... #projectplanning #projectcontrols

Very informative and insightful article To have hands-on field experience gives planning engineers an edge in understanding the real-world implications of their schedules and plans, leading to more accurate and reliable project planning. The requirement largely depends on the specific company, industry, and region. Here’s a breakdown: 1. Having field experience in construction, engineering, or fabrication provides a deep understanding of project workflows, potential challenges, and realistic timelines. This insight is valuable when planning projects. 2. In industries like construction or oil and gas, some companies may expect candidates to have a few years of field experience to understand the practical aspects of project execution. This experience helps in creating more accurate and practical project schedules. 3. Many planning engineers start their careers in technical roles such as site engineer or project engineer before transitioning to planning. This path allows them to build strong foundational knowledge before focusing on the planning aspects. 4. Some regions and companies may prioritize education and certifications (e.g., PMP, Primavera P6 expertise) over hands-on experience, although both are ideally important.

Agreed Laying the 2 kms instrument main cable with 2 gangs from the control room to the compressor may take 4 days. Laying the 2 kms instrument main cable with 2 gangs from the control room to the Heater may take 7 days. There are so many factors in site. However a planning engineer without hands on execution will expect all 2 kms cables with 2 gangs to be completed in 2 days.

Learn to ask questions, don't hesitate. Nobody knows everything. Don't keep it in mind if somebody insult you while asking questions or quarries. Over the time, senior experienced people like a person who has curiosity and willingness to do any task. Learn from them, keep aside your ego. You will be a best performer with everybody's blessings.

Agreed.. Having field experience before becoming a planning engineer is definitely beneficial. It gives you a practical understanding of the work, helps you grasp potential challenges, and enhances your ability to create realistic timelines and resource plans. Knowing the ins and outs of the job site can also improve communication with the team and lead to more effective project management.

Very informative... But the bitter truth is Company hires the planning Engineers according to their previous planning experience but not the person having practical (execution) experience... planning team should be a mixture of both the PPL...
