Big time learning at NAS Oceana’s CDC!?? Sherry Jackson, local author and teacher, visited NAS Oceana’s Midway Manor Child Development Center (CDC) to share her book, Time for Time, with the CDC’s book club, the Midway Manor Page Turners. Children had a great time learning how to read an analog clock through the eyes of Harmony, a military child who desperately wants a cool watch. Navy CDCs play a key role in the Navy’s mission by providing quality care for service member’s children. When service members know their children are in a caring and enriching environment, they can focus on the mission at hand. #NASOceana #NavyLife #TeamOceana #VirginiaBeach

Did you know that Boys & Girls Clubs of America has partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard to provide world-class youth development programs, training, and resources to military-affiliated Youth Centers and geographically dispersed military youth around the world? I hope you will join me in wearing purple for Purple UP! Day on April 16, 2024. The goal of Purple UP! Day is to demonstrate our support for military youth and their families, regardless of service affiliation.?You might ask, “Why purple?” Purple is the traditional color that signifies the blending of all military services into a common goal or outcome. ? When a military member serves, the family also serves. Military youth frequently get reassigned every few years – meaning they could attend anywhere from four to nine new schools over the course of their youth – while continually acclimating to new friends and new surroundings.?? ? Many times, military youth are uprooted during the school year or at critical times in their lives – such as the last year of high school – or to places where English might not be the primary language. While this might sound exciting to some, it can also add to the stress of deployment as their parents defend our freedom and way of life.? The services BGCA provide to military youth both on-installation and off-installation through Mission: Youth Outreach contribute to the building of resiliency within our military kids and teens.

As the new school year kicks off, let’s take a moment to recognize the #military families that enrich every corner of Pennsylvania! With over 6,000 active duty Service members and 37,000 National Guard and Reserve members, along with their spouses and children, these families bring unique strengths—and challenges—to our communities. To support military-connected #students, Pennsylvania has rolled out four impactful initiatives: 1?? Advance Enrollment: Ensures military kids can seamlessly enroll in school before they even set foot in the state, thanks to military orders. 2?? Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children: Smooths out the bumps that come with frequent school transfers, covering everything from enrollment to graduation. 3?? Military Student Identifier: A vital tool that tracks academic progress, ensuring we meet the unique needs of military-connected students. 4?? Purple Star School Program: This recognition celebrates schools that go above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for military families. Six Pennsylvania schools have already earned this badge of honor—could your district be next? Let’s make this school year one where every military-connected student feels seen, supported, and set up for success. Explore the Pennsylvania Department of Education's resources and the Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness at Penn State University to learn more. Together, we can make a real difference.

As students read about the importance of Veterans Day...Let them deepen their learning by including a writing activity or critical written response from any leveled articles/text. Also, students can interview and honor their family's very own hero...then share it out with their classmates. #Teachingtip #Reading and Writing = Increase Comprehension #Speaking and Listening = Increase Reading Skills
Veterans Day is on November 11, and is an opportunity to help students connect with history in a meaningful and engaging way. Many schools will be introducing students to the significance of military service and the value of civic responsibility, providing resources and stories that bring history to life. For literacy-focused educators, Veterans Day offers a chance to develop historical literacy through reading activities that emphasize comprehension and critical thinking. Whether it’s exploring primary sources, reflecting on veterans' experiences, or participating in projects that honor service members, these lessons can empower students to appreciate the past while building essential literacy skills. Let’s work together to inspire students and promote a future generation that values history, empathy, and informed citizenship. ?? #VeteransDay #educators #literacy

???Ivy League Opportunities for Service Members I recently had the privilege of discussing Yale’s impactful programs designed to help service members transition into Ivy League schools. It’s incredible to see how these prestigious institutions are making education accessible to those who’ve served. We’ve also connected with organizations bridging the gap between military service and higher education, helping veterans see Ivy League schools as a viable option for their future. If you’re a service member or know someone who is, this could be an exciting path to explore! ?? #VeteransEducation #IvyLeagueOpportunities #HigherEducation

?? Did You Know This About Military Children? ?? Here’s a statistic that might surprise you: Military children move an average of six to nine times during their school years, which is three times more often than their civilian peers. This constant change presents unique challenges for these resilient kids, from adjusting to new schools to forming new friendships. At IGY6, we understand the importance of supporting (our sometimes feral) military children and their families. It’s crucial to provide stability, understanding, and community for these young heroes, who often face challenges beyond their years. Let’s recognize the strength of military children and work together to create environments where they can thrive, no matter where life takes them. Want to support our military families in meaningful ways? Let’s collaborate.
