Working in the fields of mobility and transport has really opened my eyes towards how this world is not always made for all #accessforall #transportpoverty #mobilityinequality #genderedmobility #genderinplanning #womeninplanning. Looking forward to being challenged and inspired soon at this virtual conference!
Architect Urbanist | Speaker & Lecturer | United Nations Consultant | GESI Expert | Belgium’s 40u40 | Allianz Foundation Fellow | Passionate about Social-Spatial Justice | x2 Top Urban Planning and Consulting Voice
Next week, I will have the immense privilege of sharing the stage with two exceptional practitioners in urban development and gender at University of Leeds. This milestone in my career is particularly meaningful as a young professional, since I will be alongside Ines Sanchez de Madariaga and May East, whose work has profoundly influenced mine - when I tell you I’m passionate, this is what I mean, I have idols in the field! Ines Sanchez de Madariaga, Chair of the Advisory Group on Gender Issues at UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), Director of the Women and Science Unit (UMYC) of the Spanish Minister's Office for Science and Innovation, tenured lecturer and adjunct director at ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid), and internationally acclaimed expert. The concept of 'Mobility of Care', coined in 2008, was foundational in my own research and practice. Her book "Fair Shared Cities" was literally one of the first books I read after I got into feminist urban theories and I definitely recommend it! May East, is a renowned British/Brazilian urbanist, educator, singer, and songwriter. Her creative and activist approach to urbanism and her dedication to education and the arts have set a remarkable example for urban professionals like myself. She currently serves as the UN House Scotland Director of Cities Programme and is the author of the book "What if Women Designed the City?" (highly recommended). These women (amongst the likes of Terlinden, Beebeejaun and Massey) shaped the discourse on gender and urbanism and paved the way for future generations, inspiring many architects and urbanists, like myself. And as such, I'm honoured to join them at the "Women and Planning: From Theory to Practice" conference, where we will explore international perspectives on gender and urban development. Thanks to Professors Dr Karen Horwood and Charlotte Morphet for their warm invitation to this exceptional conference and the great efforts they have put into it! Looking forward to engaging with many of you there! And while you're at it, do not miss the sessions of my dear co-facilitator Susan Leadbetter from WSP; Jenna Dutton; Ewelina Jaskulska and many others. Date: 1st-2nd July? Place: Cloth Hall Court, Quebec Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 2HA - Leeds Beckett University #UrbanDevelopment #GenderEquality #Inclusive #Cities #Conference

"The motherhood penalty should be addressed in every architecture practice" Architecture needs to get serious about addressing the issues that are causing?women?to leave the profession, writes Grace Choi. Excellent review by Dezeen of new book Inclusion Emergency by Grace Choi Hannah Durham we are delighted to have played a small part in this book, read more below: Anyone tired of seeing a lack of diversity at senior levels of practice??Why do we gradually lose women after they have children and why is progress to change this pattern so painfully slow? Bias and discrimination in architecture take various forms throughout a female architect's working life, intersecting with and compounded by factors such as race, disability, sexual orientation and social demographics. We need to examine the systemic obstacles that women encounter, which worsen with age and are often ingrained in tradition and habit. How can we create an environment that enables women to stay in the profession for longer? Amanda Moore Karolina Alicja Stephenson Laura Whitney Lucie Dick Nancy Hargreaves https://lnkd.in/epPrQyWj

When Claudette Soto, LEED AP—architect, structural engineer, and president of owner’s representative and construction management firm baso—walks on to projects, she’s often mistaken for someone’s admin. In situations where people know she’s the owner of the company, they assume that she is an acting steward for her husband (she’s not). Only 10 percent of women make up the construction industry nationwide, and Soto is part of an even smaller pool of women of color in leadership. The entrepreneur has more than fifty clients with projects totaling over $100 million, and she built Chicago’s only Latina-owned representative and construction management firm with the intention of diversifying the industry. “I formed baso, Ltd. not only to support the Black and Brown community, but also to help retain talent in this industry,” says Soto, who is also the founder of VAMOS, a grassroot organization that introduces science, technology, engineering, arts, and math careers to underserved middle school students. “Because women and minorities are usually pushed out, what I try to do is build them up. My mission is to help them navigate the challenges of being underestimated, criticized, and judged, so they can emerge stronger.” Discover her inspiring journey in our "In Plain Sight" series: https://hubs.la/Q02n00Kh0 Every day, in every part of society, Latinos make an impact. That impact is noteworthy, yet it does not appear in “mainstream” media. Hispanic Executive’s “In Plain Sight” series focuses on owning our narrative and highlighting efforts by Latinos that both shape and guide the United States—efforts that are in plain sight. #HispanicExecMag #InPlainSight #LatinoExcellence #Empowerment

Where are the women in the architectural curriculum? Asked Sumita Singha OBE ?? at the @RIBA Interface 2 workshop. Why are women so underrepresented in the profession? Only 31% of architects in the uk are women. A range of reasons from the way women are treated, being the prime carer, and of course salaries. Our own Part 3 employment survey PASEO shows the extent of this gap. Our recent survey shows a gap. Sumita called for an audit of teaching staff, researchers and students; mentoring; and represented in publications.

Do areas with low access to opportunities suffer from a lack of transit service, lack of opportunities, or both? We propose a four-step framework to dissect the elements of #place and #mobility in #access through a lens focused on #equality. Introducing measures of Spatial Inequality of Transit Services (SITS) and Spatial Inequality of Opportunities (SIO), our framework: (i) identifies the spatial equality of #transit service through the lens of access, (ii) disentangles the intertwined components of place and mobility, and (iii) incorporates principles of social justice into transportation planning. Uncover how the interplay between transit networks and land use patterns contributes to access inequality in our recent publication, co-authored with my tireless student Fatemeh Janatabadi! #urbanplanning #transportationequity #socialjustice #accessibility #transportationplanning #publictransit #transitservice #landusepolicy George Mason University - College of Science George Mason University - College of Engineering and Computing https://lnkd.in/eKJtwMst

Benches play a vital role in our public lives, offering opportunities for relaxation and social interaction. Since 2021, Dr. Julia King and Olivia Theocharides-Feldman have led the Young Researchers-in-Residence program at LSE Cities at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). During their research into the use of public space by teenage girls, they discovered that benches, often used as hangout spots, are both essential and contentious for this demographic. In this article, they share some key findings and insights concerning how parks and public spaces can better cater for teenage girls?? #publicspace #landscapearchitecture #urbanspace #inclusivedesign
