Just keep swimming ???? There are 7 species of Pacific salmon globally and just 1 species of Atlantic salmon. While Pacific and Atlantic salmon are distantly related, they have many chromosomal differences and cannot interbreed. The oldest salmon record in North America comes from sabertooth salmon fossils that date up to 7 million years ago. These prehistoric fish could grow up to 3 meters long! Salmon are typically anadromous, meaning they live in both fresh and saltwater over the course of their lives. They are born in freshwater, journey to the ocean, and then return to freshwater streams to spawn. #wildlife #alphabet #salmon #nature #funfacts

Horseshoe Crabs: Time Travellers in the Seas ????. Greetings from a trip through prehistory! ???? The scientific name for horseshoe crabs is Limulus polyphemus, and they are real time travellers. A few amazing facts about these marine animals are as follows: ?? Swimming Inverted: Visualise these crustaceans swimming across the water inverted, resembling aquatic acrobats. They are considerably more intriguing and mysterious because of this quirk. ?? 200 Million Years and Counting: The title is accurate! The history of horseshoe crabs spans 200 million years. ?? ?? They saw dinosaurs come and go, gracefully enduring many geological periods. ?? Unchangeable Body Form: ?? Your body functions as a time capsule. Its structure hasn't changed much in millions of years. ?? Their sword-shaped tail and helmet-like carapace serve as emblems of their ancestral lineage's legitimacy. Sleek, silvery, swimming in the sea. Oh I do love to spot these fish! ?? Say hello to the hornlip mullet (Oedalechilus labiosus)! Here are three cool things I learned about this super-cool critter. 1?? It has a genus all to itself! A genus is a group of very closely related species. Some mullet genera (the plural of genus), like the "Mugil," have lots of species. Others like the "Plicomugil" only contain one - in this case, our hornlip mullet! ??? They love silty seafloors, which they can scoop up and filter out pretty much anything living (or ex-living) for food. ?? They love hanging out in groups! There are lots of reasons fish like to stick together… protection from predators, easier to get food, and easier to for making babies.
