Rural crime is serious, organised, and international and has lasting impacts on our communities. Our latest research revealed 22 active organised crime groups (OCGs) in rural areas. These groups exploit the perceived isolation of rural areas, but their impact is felt far and wide. To effectively combat crime, addressing rural crime must be a key part of national and local strategies.? ? In Ecuador, according to the investigative website?InSight Crime, the homicide rate has risen from 5.8 per 100,000 in 2017 to 44.5 in 2023. Honduras’ emergency measures against organized crime have had little, if any, positive impact, and El Salvador’s model, while effective in having rapidly detained tens of thousands of gang member with virtually no resistance, is hard to replicate, ineffective against complex criminal threats and undermines the rule of law. In a new analysis, our experts write that international support is needed to prevent violence and curb transnational crime in the region. https://lnkd.in/gcr6CnDE

After years of escalating criminal violence, heavily armed criminal gangs finally pushed #Haiti over the edge.?While facing an extreme situation, Haiti is not the only #Caribbean nation affected by metastasizing gang violence. Many of the region’s 33 political jurisdictions are registering record-levels of homicide and violence crime linked to a rising tide of #drugs, #guns, and #gangs. The Caribbean is home to five of the ten most homicidal countries in the world. The murder rate of?#Turks and #Caicos?recently climbed above 77 per 100,000 people, a doubling of the previous year.?#Jamaica, #SaintLucia, and #Trinidad and Tobago have also registered record-breaking levels of lethal violence. Both external and internal factors account for the Caribbean crime wave including drug trafficking, gun smuggling, and high levels of corruption. A persistent feature are high levels of firearm-related violence. But another big factor is the fragmentation and splintering of #gangs. There are literally hundreds of gang factions across the region, and some of them are hyper-violent. The #US has a particular responsibility to step up measures to reduce supply and drug demand (and associated harms) and curb straw-man firearms purchases and trafficking that shape violence across the Caribbean. R. V. Gundur and I explore some potential strategies for how this can be done with Small Wars Journal this week. https://lnkd.in/eN8bY4t8

Day 5 (final day) at #CCPCJ33 ... My colleague, Jér?me Mangelinckx is presenting our #DataMosaic project on Data for the monitoring the safety of imprisoned children in Europe at a side-event on #violenceagainstchildren / #corporalpunishment ?We are producing a monitoring tool and accompanying guidance for better evidence-based responses to violence - given the sad reality that many children in prison remain unsafe and experience violence in many different forms. ?? Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gnEEuwya by Penal Reform International and Global Initiative on Justice With Children ??The week has been insightful, encouraging and discouraging at the same time, as the commitment to build better justice systems is shared by many. 5 resolutions expected to be adopted by the Commission at the end of today on issues including treatment of children associated with terrorist groups?and reducing reoffending, however negotiations show it is clear multilateralism is threatened by global politics and war, and the CCPCJ is not immune.

5 个月Another week of the same people back slapping each other on jobs well done and talking about rural crime but nothing actually gets done to help the actual farmers. Proof is in the pudding where rural crime continues unabated losing the industry £50million plus year on year and that figure does not include non reported crime.
