The history of the labor movement and the fight for better working conditions is preserved in the stories of our national parks. NPF supports national parks, programs, and projects that highlight these stories. ?? At César E. Chávez National Monument, an NPF Inclusive Storytelling grant is enabling the park to catalog and assess the oral histories related to the farmworker movement and conduct a gap analysis to determine which stories are not represented. The park will then work to fill these gaps. ?? An NPF Open OutDoors for Kids grant is connecting students to Pullman National Historical Park and the A. Phillip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, to learn about the history of the Pullman community and the significance of the Pullman Porters in the Great Migration and to the labor movement in the United States. The histories of work and working people help us explore the lives of a broader range of individuals – each with their own labor history to share – and invite us to imagine a better future. https://lnkd.in/eEKKX23W

Our first project last year that got Community Planning Collaborative going. I absolutely loved working on this project, as historic research is one of my most favorite things to do. One of my goals for this year is to get the word our more about this project, and the great work the Florida Chitlin' Circuit Group is doing. The Group is a collective of several Florida Main Street communities working together to document and highlight their Chitlin' Circuit heritage as a means of historic preservation and economic vitality. Research from this project has identified that the Chitlin’ Circuit existed in large part because of what has been identified as “the stroll,” a term coined by musician Walter Barnes in the 1930s to describe commercial and entertainment areas in Black neighborhoods across the country. Florida Main Streets in Black communities are historic evidence of the stroll. These districts, with dance halls, bars, juke joints, and clubs, provided the backbone in which the Chitlin’ Circuit thrived. The Chitlin' Circuit can't be separated from the larger environmental context of neighborhoods and communities. We hope this information will help inform historic preservation efforts, as well as urban planning efforts. I've had two interactions with fellow experienced planners recently that had limited to no knowledge of the history of Black commercial districts and how that played a role in neighborhood history, culture and development. We hope research like this will be of aid. You can download the report at the Florida Chitlin' Circuit group website and learn more: https://lnkd.in/eFjF9cXs #historicpreservation #culturalheritage #blackhistory #urbanplanning #mainstreet
??Looking back on our first year, we are grateful for the first project that got us started. ?? The Florida Chitlin' Circuit Research and Documentation Project was completed through a partnership of several Florida Main Street communities and funded by a Florida Division of Historical Resources grant. We took a deep dive into the history of the Circuit in Florida and venues in Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Fort Pierce, and Eatonville. Thanks to the graphic design skills of Karen Essic, this report really came together and we are so proud of it. ??Check it out when you get a chance! Hello everybody.?I want to direct your attention to an excellent book.?It’s called Charleston: Race, Water, and the Coming Storm by Susan Crawford (@SusanCrawford).?This book is not only a meticulously researched and annotated history of the racist marginalization of the black community in Charleston but it is also a warning shot over the bow for all coastal cities of the world.?How many of us have visited Charleston, rated by Travel and Leisure as the number one city in the country 11 years in a row, and not been charmed by the restaurants on East Bay Street??Beneath this genteel veneer, however, lies a dark history and a simmering time bomb of increased flooding.?Not content to simply write from home, Crawford supplements her deep dive into archival books, maps, and articles, by conducting dozens of interviews with people from all walks of life in Charleston as well as leading climate change experts. ?What she uncovers is not pretty.?Time and time again, she documents the displacement of the African American community into the most flood-prone areas of the lower peninsula.?Time and time again, whenever black owned lands are valued by the powers that be levers are moved to displace them and build expensive neighborhoods in their place.?However, nature will have the final word as even these communities will eventually be abandoned in the face of inexorable sea level rise.?This unflinching interrogation of Charleston’s past is also a harbinger of things to come for all coastal cities of the world.?As the seas rise, and they will, tough choices will have to be made.?Can they be made with fairness, with justice, with equity, with dignity??This book helps us understand mistakes of the past and hopefully, if we’re smart, arm us with the wisdom for a more just and sustainable coastal future. #SusanCrawford #SeaLevelRise
