What do you think of the new format of the #ChampionsLeague? Personally, I find it very interesting. Given the current standings of many teams, it’s really a great level of competition. But let’s look at more specific examples. The top 8: #Liverpool in first place. In the form that?Arne Slot's?team is in, it’s no surprise they’ve taken the top spot. Right now, #Liverpool is one of the most consistent clubs in Europe and a clear favorite to win the #ChampionsLeague. The only question is whether they can maintain their energy, as the Premier League, along with the #LeagueCup and #FACup, is a very demanding competition. This forces #Liverpool’s coach to rotate the squad, which can sometimes affect the results. The other teams are close behind, but in my opinion, #Barcelona’s instability will drop them below second place. Teams from 9th to 24th place: The main surprise here is #RealMadrid and #ManchesterCity. These teams have shown very inconsistent performances this year, which has reflected in their #ChampionsLeague results. While #RealMadrid has compensated for their failures with good performances in #LaLiga and is still in the running for the title, the English side is gradually slipping further away from their record five consecutive championships. Injuries have had a huge impact on these clubs. Let’s see what happens in the new year. This trend bodes very well for TNT Sports venues as the Autumn Nations Series rolls back into town. For all the doom and gloom that often surrounds it, international rugby union has never been in a better place, with the last few years producing incredible matches, iconic moments and some positively hissing rivalries. Argentina, England, France, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa are impossible to split right now - factor in a capricious Scotland side plus a resurgent Italy and we have an abundance of the tight, ferocious, competitive fixtures that pack out pubs coming up. England v New Zealand kicks off a month of action on the 2nd November, now’s the time to get your plans in place, start talking to customers about it and get those crucial pre-bookings in. ?? ???????????? ?????????????? - ?? ???????? ?????? A theme we talked about in last month’s UK analysis was the consistency with which big US boxing bouts emerge as the biggest missed opportunities. That trend continued in September with Canelo Alvarez’s latest bout driving significant value for the 7 venues who purchased and advertised it on FANZO. Digging deeper (as far back as our detailed fixture data goes), the Mexican great’s last 5 fights each averaged just shy of 2000 searches for a local venue on FANZO, being funnelled into fewer than 10 UK bars showing them. Yes, they’re late-night fights. Yes, there’s a PPV cost. But if you already have the means to stay open, no other name in sport offers such consistent value in terms of fan interest for the venues that do show Canelo’s bouts. ???? ???????????? ?????????????????????? If the AFL Grand Final popping up second in our missed opportunities piqued your interest, the wider top ten should make fascinating reading. 6 of the 10 biggest opportunities for UK venues were AFL (Aussie Rules) or NRL (Rugby League) fixtures as Australia’s two biggest winter codes reach a crescendo each September. Bloody good insight but not something pubs can act on for another 11 months now, surely? Not so fast. This weekend’s NRL Grand Final offers one last opportunity to tap into any local ex-pat communities and generate some bonus trade on Saturday morning. Essential reading for venues looking to pull the trigger on UFC 304... ?? ?????????????????? ???????? ?????????? ???????????????????? ???????? Euro 2024 predictably dominated the search data for June as fans got to enjoy a Covid-free summer tournament for the first time in 6 years. Interestingly, the data here re-iterates what a relatively damp squib the last World Cup was for UK fans and the on-trade. At the time of writing (with two round-of-16 games to go), search traffic for Euro 2024 on FANZO has already exceeded the total we saw across the entirety of Qatar 2022, when the Christmas scheduling, 10:00 am kick-off times and unease about the ethics of the tournament, saw some fans stay at home. ????????? ?????????? It was a surprise to see two of the missed opportunities last month come from the French Open. Upon inspection, this resulted from moderate fan interest being met by very few pubs advertising fixtures, with the tournament somewhat squirrelled away on Eurosport. Those missed opportunities, however modest, are part of a wider upward trend for tennis - searches for venues showing the sport are up 33% vs last year. * Is this the 'Challengers' effect (this year’s saucy box office hit starring Zendaya) playing out?? * Perhaps it’s Katie Boulter and Jack Draper both cracking the world top 30?? * Or a reflection that the men’s slams have stopped being the 1 or 2 horse races they were for 20-odd years? Either way, pubs face a short window to capitalise on that uptick in mainstream interest. Make the most of the next 10 days of Wimbledon and don’t discount the upcoming Olympic event and US Open. Both tournaments boast UK-friendly game times but sustained search traffic in pubs will live and die with British involvement in the draws. ?? ?????? 304 - ????????'?? ???????? ????????? Peeking ahead to July now, UFC: 304 represents both a statement show for MMA in the UK and a quick reminder of where the power lies. Manchester hosts the UFC for the first time in 8 years with two British champions - Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinal - triumphantly topping the bill. The catch? The main card will run from 3-6 am GMT to cater to the comparatively huge US TV audience. Ah. That said, it's still a significant opportunity - arguably the biggest MMA event the UK will see all decade and a sport that has seen pub searches soar in recent years. The challenge will be balancing the revenue potential with increased costs and operating complexities. Those venues with 24-hour operations already in place (hello casino sports bars ??) look best placed to easily capitalise. With PPV packages for the on-trade yet to be announced, now’s the time to start planning A) whether to show it and B) how to set the event for success if so. #ontrade #outofhome #livesport #fanzo
