Social identities, or categorizations we are assigned or born into that grant power, benefits, or disadvantages, help inform our lived experiences and how we relate to each other, and are used to explain differences in outcomes, effort, or ability. The way our identities intersect is largely impacted by systems rooted in oppressive concepts embedded into our history: colonization & settler colonialism and cultural norms that uphold racism, patriarchy, and cisheteronormativity. People embody many social identities, and each one doesn't exist in a vacuum. Rather, different aspects of our identity overlap with one another to shape a unique experience for each of us. Our lived experiences (your thoughts, beliefs, choices and how we are treated) are shaped by how these social identities INTERSECT. And the 'power' social identities hold can change and are contextual to place and time. For example, who is perceived as 'white' has changed over the course of time and is dependent on place (ie. United States vs. Latin America) How do you keep intersectionality in mind as you navigate interpersonal interactions with people of different social identities?
Everyone (including you!) holds several types of identities. Maybe you’re a first-generation college graduate, a Muslim, ?and also? LGBTQ2IA+. At Consultants for Good, we continually work to understand how the intersectionality of multiple identities impacts folks in the nonprofit sector. This month, we recently learned more about the career experiences of nonprofit employees who are both LGBTQ2IA+ and BIPOC. Take a look at what we discovered: https://lnkd.in/gjRxxKGa Emily Shamsid-Deen, MNM, Patrilie Hernandez, Jacqueline Adam-Taylor – As some of C4G’s resident DEI experts, can you share a thought or two about how nonprofit leaders can keep the intersectionality of various identities in mind as they lead with a DEI approach? ?? #notjustanotherpridepost #nonprofit #nonprofits #nonprofitorg #nonprofitorgs #nonprofitorganization #nonprofitorganizations #nonprofitleader #nonprofitleaders #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitwork #nonprofitDEI

Better Grants Start with Better Decisions It's not the dog's fault. The one that starts barking at 3 a.m. and doesn't stop. The owners left it outside. But still, I blamed that dog for invading my dreams with its piercing, rhythmic cry. For years, I blamed convoluted grant applications for driving grant writers barking mad. Until I woke up—gradually through networking, workshops, reading, and learning. Then I realized that the lack of transparency and outmoded applications weren't the most damaging aspects of the grant-seeking process. The lack of grant funding for marginalized groups, like people of color and LGBTQ organizations, is far more concerning. According to reports, only 1.8% of philanthropic giving goes to Black-led organizations, and a mere 0.28% goes to the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, many funders refuse to provide general operating grants, demanding new programs for every grant cycle. How often have you heard, "We don't fund people, only programs"? As if programs magically materialize without people behind them. Naming these issues feels overwhelming or cathartic when commiserating with grant pros. But that's just the start of making things better. On the Fundraising HayDay Podcast, co-host Amanda Day and I are dedicated to making space for awareness and connection with grant writers who want change and groups working toward it. More than Grant Writers, #CrappyFundingPractices, and GrantAdvisor are doing great work in these areas. Follow them on LinkedIn and other platforms to learn how you can volunteer and maybe sleep a little better at night for having done so. **************************************************************************** Hi, I’m Kimberly! The Building Movement Project (BMP) is asking #nonprofit leaders to fill out a new survey about the impact of the current political climate. Since the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the use of affirmative action in higher education, its ripple effects have spread across various sectors, especially on programs for racial equity and justice. Simultaneously, communities around the country are facing restrictions related to reproductive choices, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, and more. There is no data on what is happening to nonprofits because of these and other similar activities. This short survey will help us understand how nonprofits and community groups are experiencing and responding to these challenges. The results of the survey will provide valuable insights and recommendations for nonprofits and funders. Share your perspective and take BMP’s survey today! https://bit.ly/48MMI06

Do you have a staff member or trustee who is influencing big thinking in your foundation? We are looking for three individuals from our broad and diverse membership to join me in conversation at ACF’s Leaders Forum on 18 September.?This is a unique opportunity to help steer the dialogue before and during the event, working in collaboration with ACF staff, networks and fellow members to determine the topics which are important to you. ? A week ago, this gave me pause: ~20 years ago, 60% of nonprofits were engaged in advocacy. Today it's 31%. Um... What are we doing as a sector if we are not engaged in advocacy? This: We're providing services without addressing underlying structural issues. Advocacy is the slow path to change. And it must be done. I got the above stat from the Joan Garry podcast with guest Dr. Akilah Watkins from Independent Sector. I love how Joan makes the direct link between advocacy and communications: "Having run an LGBT nonprofit that was an advocacy organization, probably the biggest arrow in our quiver was our ability to build public awareness campaigns...to get the word out broadly to queer and non-queer people about a particular issue that would fire up everybody. "And what did that require? It required an investment in communications and marketing."

If the demands of your practice and personal life don't allow the time for 20 hours of pro bono work, you can still fulfill your goal with a donation to Southern Legal Counsel! In response to a need for legal services to the poor, the Florida Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that lawyers should aspire to do 20 hours of pro bono work each year OR contribute $350 to a legal aid organization. We are at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ rights in Florida, while also protecting the civil, constitutional and education rights of Floridians with severe legal needs. From transgender Floridians in need of health care, to our unhoused neighbors whose rights are being violated in local government sweeps, to children with disabilities in need of access to special education, thousands of Floridians count on us in their pursuit of justice. And they are counting on you to make sure we can continue to serve them. Donate now so that we can continue our important work: https://bit.ly/3NIk21g #donate #donatenow #probono #probonodonation #charitablegiving #fundraising #fundraiser #giveback #makeadifference #bethechange #nonprofitlawyer #nonprofitlaw #notforprofitlaw #notforprofitlawyers #probonolaw #probonolawyers #lawfirm #floridalawyer #lawyers #southernlegalcounsel #SLC #civiljustice #civilrights #socialjustice #humanrights

Well said, Jon. I recently had a great chat with Tiernan Brady about the need for the LGBTQ+ movement to rethink our strategies and tactics from the past few years. This pattern highlights the importance of change. What should we change? While I’ve been out of the day-to-day work of the movement for some time, here are a few thoughts: - Center grassroots activists and community leaders: We need to ensure that every program, event, and partnership advances the goals of the most vulnerable parts of our community. Always ask: Is this helping those most in need? - Reevaluate our relationship with business: Businesses play a crucial role in advancing LGBTQ+ equality, but we must ensure they do not set our agenda. As Jon suggests, let's focus on “more campaign, less champagne.” - Democratize networks, money, and knowledge: Empower LGBTQ+ communities to define and achieve their own well-being. This is a key focus of the work being done by Koppa - The LGBTI+ Economic Power Lab and Open For Business.
WHY THE LGBTQ+ MOVEMENT NEEDS LESS CHAMPAGNE AND MORE CAMPAIGN Nobody I know is that surprised at the “shocking” story of lavish spending at GLAAD. But the problem here isn’t GLAAD, the problem is the warped culture that’s developed around #LGBTQ+ fundraising and activism. GLAAD’s CEO Sarah Kate Ellis is a formidable campaigner for LGBTQ+ equality, and GLAAD has long been a supporter of our work at Open For Business. She’s not the real issue here, we have a bigger problem. There’s nothing wrong with using a bit of glamour and entertainment to get the dollars flowing. But I can tell you it’s painful to see a company decline to spend $30k backing vital work in, say, Uganda - and then watch them drop $100k on a couple of tables at a gala dinner. Meanwhile, US-based anti-LGBTQ+ groups are pumping hundreds of millions into places like East Africa and South-East Asia. It’s a well-funded and well-coordinated global campaign of hate – spreading disinformation, backing anti-LGBTQ+ politicians and pushing repressive legislation. Just three of these big anti-LGBTQ+ organizations reported a combined income of over $1 billion in 2021-2022, according to a report by Global Philanthropy Project. That’s more than the total funding for 8,000 LGBTI organisations across the world during the same years. That’s why it’s awful to see profligacy at the heart of the LGBTQ+ movement. I hope GLAAD doesn’t lose donors because of this – now more than ever, the US needs strong and effective LGBTQ+ organisations. But it’s time to re-focus on what really impacts the LGBTQ+ community globally. One of our coalition partners once told me, “The thing I love about Open For Business is that it’s more campaign than Champagne”. Maybe a few other LGBTQ+ organisations could tip the balance a little further in this direction.
