Hello, I'm Congresswoman Diana Degette. Thank you for being here to celebrate National Clean Energy Week and for your work to support responsible energy policy. Advancing comprehensive clean energy policy is vital to our efforts to combat the climate crisis. I firmly believe that this crisis is the most pressing issue that we face today. We could get everything else right, but it wouldn't matter if we didn't act on the climate crisis in Congress, this has been. One of my top priorities for many years, I currently serve as the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy, Climate and Grid Security, where I've been working with Chairman Jeff Duncan, a Republican from South Carolina, to find bipartisan solutions to the climate crisis. One of our primary goals in developing legislation was modernizing nuclear energy, which is crucial for our clean energy future. Nuclear energy provides about 20. Percent of the electricity in the US and it's the nation's largest source of carbon free energy, making up more than half our emissions free electricity. Together with Chairman Duncan, I wrote and passed the Atomic Energy Advancement Act, which enhances our energy supply chain, improves safety recruits are highly trained and skilled workforce and ensures our nuclear regulations are up to date. President Biden recently signed this bill into law and. It's a major advancement for clean energy, but we know that nuclear energy is not a silver bullet in Congress. We need serious action to meet our climate goals. We've made progress in recent years, but we know it's just the first step. Much of this progress is thanks to three historic bills that are cutting costs for working families, creating new jobs, and addressing the climate crisis. The Infrastructure Investment and JOBS Act provided $1.2 trillion to our nation's infrastructure, while the CHIPS and Science Act boosted domestic research and manufacturing right here in the United States. And then there's the Inflation Reduction Act, the most expansive climate action. In our history, passed by House Democrats and signed into law by President Biden, these provisions have helped create over 271,000 jobs, secured over $350 billion in clean energy projects, and made communities more resilient against the disastrous impacts of climate change. This includes nearly 5000 jobs and $1.7 billion just in my home state of Colorado two years later. We're coming to see the positive impacts of the IRA on our country. While these historical laws are helping us to move in the right direction, we have so much more to do. Taking on energy production and transitioning to clean energy will take time, investment and a commitment to renewable energy sources. I'm focused on delivering a serious solution that lowers energy costs, protects our environment, and secures a healthy future. For generations to come. So that's why in the last Congress, I wrote and introduced the Clean Energy Innovation and Deployment Act, a comprehensive bill that invests in clean energy technologies, establishes a clean energy standard, incentivizes methane waste prevention, and lowers energy costs for low income households. This bill provides a path to an all of the above approach to energy production, including solar, wind, nuclear and transitional. Energy sources. It also encourages traditional energy producers to operate in a way that protects our environment and reduces carbon emissions. Several of the incentives from that bill, such as the 0 Emission Electricity Credits, encourage power companies to employ innovative techniques that reduce the harmful emissions that were included in the Inflation Reduction Act. CDA is a straightforward and comprehensive approach to achieving our goal. Of net 0 emissions by 2050 and I'm focused on doing everything I can to move it forward. Thanks again for your commitment to clean energy and I know we will continue to work together to ensure that we take on the climate crisis and secure a healthy future for generations to come.
