Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) is concerned the House bill’s cuts and policy changes will lead to increased vulnerability to disease outbreaks, weakened emergency preparedness, stifled research and innovation, and long-term economic consequences across the nation. Thus, we strongly oppose this bill and call on the House to restore funding to these critical issues in the Labor-HHS-ED appropriations bill. We look forward to working with Congress to explore alternative policy solutions to ensure a stronger investment in the public health system. Read more about the House FY 2025 bill proposals that ASPPH particularly opposes:?https://lnkd.in/gA9WA_FW
The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) is deeply concerned by cuts and structural changes to public health agencies proposed in the House Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (Labor-HHS-ED) appropriations bill. The cuts to key public health programs in the FY 2025 bill are unacceptable. This reduced funding would weaken the nation’s public health system on the heels of a pandemic that continues to kill hundreds of Americans daily. The House bill demonstrates a lack of foresight in public health and the tools necessary to ensure a healthier and safer country.? Key Points of Concern: ?? The $1.7 billion cut to the CDC: This significant reduction undermines the CDC’s ability to protect public health, safety, and security. ?? Elimination of funding for the Center for Forecasting and Analytics (CFA): This hampers the government's ability to predict and respond to emerging health threats. ?? Cuts to CDC programs on firearm injury prevention and climate and health research: These are critical areas that require more, not less, funding. ?? Structural changes at the NIH: Consolidating 27 institutes into 15 new centers could dilute focus and impede progress in critical health research. ?? Impeding DEIJ initiatives: Blocking policies that promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice undermines efforts to create an equitable public health workforce. ASPPH calls on Congress to restore funding and support a stronger public health infrastructure. We remain committed to advocating for a robust and equitable health system that can effectively respond to future challenges. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/gpnA-abd

Health departments are short 80,000 public health workers, which means employees often must take on multiple roles and projects beyond the ones they were hired for. This makes it difficult for health departments to meet the service needs of the community. ? CDC’s Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) funded 107 health departments to increase the size and capabilities of the public health workforce around the country. PHIG’s flexible funding gives public health workers the ability to meet current service needs and handle complex health situations today and in the future. https://bit.ly/3R4WG78
