How wonderful to receive this article from my friend and colleague, Jeanefer Jean Charles, MBE! It is an article by Sophie Akbar on her journey as a producer. https://lnkd.in/dzJ6X8Bj Her role at Without Walls is an outcome of the work Jeanefer and I did as consultants with the outdoor arts consortium in 2020-21. A chance for me to reflect on the change-making work we achieved with creative leaders in the industry, gathering their perceptions, thoughts, and solutions to resolve the complex challenges faced, and how to create a healthier, more equitable industry moving forward. How often do we reflect on what has been achieved, where the learning and opportunities are, and who holds those conversations? After a 360 review of Without Walls, we focused on the recommendation of low-hanging fruit with short-term and low-cost impact, along with stretch goals such as investing in talent for the long term. In Without Wall's case, a high amount of exemplary practices and authentic relationships were already in place. Receiving this article also resonates with conversations from this week about the long-term commitment to change in practice by investing in under-represented talent. On a deeper level, the brilliant work that Sophie is doing in the sector reminds me of the legacy and messages that Director Abdul Shayek shared through the consultation process, his work at Tara Theatre, and his activism for change across the industry. Successful change happens when we start with the low-hanging fruit—what can we implement straight away that builds momentum, who needs to lead that change —and what is required to make a longer-lasting impact? Thank you, Without Walls Consortium, for actively listening, the long-term commitment and the appetite for embracing change of doing things differently.

The Theatre of Business: A Masterclass in Storytelling Imagine stepping onto a stage, the spotlight is on you, and the audience is waiting with bated breath. This is theatre. But isn't it also business? In theatre, the script is your strategy. Actors are your team, bringing the script to life. The audience? Your customers, who need to be captivated and engaged. Rehearsals? That’s your preparation, refining your pitch, and perfecting your approach. Just like in a play, understanding your audience is crucial.? Authenticity shines through, whether on stage or in a meeting. The most memorable performances are those that touch our hearts, just like the best business interactions. Every day, I step onto the stage of business, drawing from my passion for theatre to create narratives that connect, inspire, and drive results. Because at the end of the day, whether in the spotlight or the boardroom, it's all about telling a story that resonates. Here's to the art of business storytelling, where passion meets profession, and every act is an opportunity to create something unforgettable. #Theatre #Business #Storytelling #tempt

I begin rehearsals for my new show in about 2 weeks… I’m very excited! Let’s explore the world of fearless theatre-making. It’s not just about putting on a show; it’s about creating something extraordinary, challenging norms, and setting the stage alight with our boldness. Being fearless in theatre means embracing the unknown. It’s about venturing into uncharted territories, experimenting with unconventional ideas, and daring to fail. Because in those failures often lie the seeds of true theatrical brilliance. Curiosity guides us in this theatrical journey. We must question everything - why does this character behave this way? What if we performed the script backwards? How can we make the audience not just watch, but feel, smell, taste the story?I’ve always believed that the most powerful theatre comes from a place of honesty and imagination. It’s about peeling back the layers of society and ourselves, exposing the truth underneath. It’s about creating moments that make the audience react and question everything they thought they knew. Being curious means we’re always learning and growing. We draw inspiration from everywhere - the bustling streets of Hong Kong, ancient myths, modern technology - everything has the potential to inspire. Let’s be bold. Let’s create theatre that provokes, challenges, and leaves our audience changed. Let’s not just push boundaries - let’s redefine them entirely. In theatre, being fearless and curious isn’t just an option - it’s a necessity. Who’s ready to create some theatrical magic? #FearlessTheatre #CuriousCreator #TheatreMagic #BoldArtistry #hkyaf #lindseymcalister #lindseymcalisterart

?? What kind of leadership do we need in the theatre of the future? On Saturday I had the opportunity to reflect on this question with European theatre makers from the Mitos21 network at the Thalia Theatre. Against a backdrop of political upheaval, fundamental questions about funding, an impending generational change in the audience, or unresolved questions about the realisation of diversity, cultural participation, or sustainability, theatres, and their employees, ensemble members, and dramaturges need orientation. But how is this possible at a time when the leadership model itself is being questioned in many places? Here are three key insights: ?? Leadership must succeed in giving theatres autonomy and room for manoeuvre in a complex environment with sometimes contradictory expectations from many stakeholders (e.g. politics, the arts scene, the media, sponsors, etc.). This requires skillful stakeholder management and discourses that help to reflect on mutual expectations and to balance them as far as possible in the interests of the theatre. ?? Leadership is responsible for mediating and integrating the internal structural tensions between artistic and non-artistic departments. A first step in this direction is to open up their local rationalities and make them discussable. ?? Leadership must ensure that organisational design becomes an issue in the theatre. The structures of the theatre have a strong influence on the artistic work. At best, they support it. Organisational design requires knowledge, time, resources, and legitimacy. ?? I'm looking forward to talking with anyone interested in these exciting topics! #organisationaldesign #culturalmanagement #structures https://mitos21.com/#1

This past Sunday, I had the privilege of attending Hans Zimmer Live in Vancouver, and if you’re close to me, that’s probably all you’ve been hearing about! The concert wasn’t just magical ?, filled with goosebumps and emotions—it was the way Hans introduced each artist, how the band played in perfect harmony ??, and how, from my view, they were all captivated by Hans himself. On my walk home with my husband, I couldn’t stop thinking about Hans as a leader. How does someone become such a powerhouse? Of course, in typical Kathy fashion, I’ve been digging deeper and reading up on Hans Zimmer. His success stems from embracing change—he was an early adopter of digital tools, constantly pushing creative boundaries. He builds strong partnerships, like his iconic collaboration with Christopher Nolan, demonstrating the power of aligning with others who share your vision. But what stood out most to me was his ability to empower his team, giving credit to his musicians and fostering an environment where everyone shines ? . His pursuit of authenticity—immersing himself in different cultures to honor the stories he tells—really resonated with me. These qualities offer powerful leadership lessons: embracing innovation, nurturing genuine partnerships, and elevating your team can create something magical. I came across this TED Talk where Hans reflects on his collaboration with the BBC Natural History Unit. What really stood out to me is how he emphasized the power of listening—listening to each other to create beautiful music and work together as a team: https://lnkd.in/guRk-ZYF. Now, isn’t that something that translates across all industries? How we make our teams feel, how we show up for them, and the power of being seen, heard, and understood. And to think, all of this came from a 3-hour concert ??. Happy Tuesday! #Leadership #HansZimmer #HansZimmerLive #Teamwork #Innovation #Empowerment #Authenticity #PowerofListening #TuesdayThoughts #Creativity #GrowthMindset #Vancouver

What is my superpower? Besides being 'Super Dad' (self-anointed and proudly owned!), one of them is theatre - the kind that values collaboration, self-organization, and empowers everyone involved. The kind of theatre that marries imagination with expression, where rehearsals are moments of deep presence, preparing for the unexpected and organic to emerge. Anything can happen... I’m no star director or performer, but years in theatre devising and cultural immersions have reshaped my worldview in unexpected and wonderful ways. My facilitation approach in organisational spaces is deeply rooted in these expansive experinces of theatre-making. Theatre has taught me to shed inhibitions, connect mind and body, and grant permission, to myself and my collaborators, while guiding others in creative exploration beyond the stage. Curious to get a taste of this? Join me and Tarryn Lee for a one-day '#TheatreSprint' in Linden, #Johannesburg on October 5th, 2024. No theatre experience is needed. If you’re a coach, leader, facilitator, or creatively curious, join us to uncover new layers of your creative self and explore self-expression in fresh, embodied, and unexpected ways. What You’ll Experience: ?? Play with your thinking, broaden perspectives, and build adaptability through fun, engaging methods. ?? Dive into theatre-making to inspire and enrich your work with artistic creativity. ?? Learn innovative ways to engage your body in creative work and collaboration. ?? Explore devised-theatre methodologies to create and perform. ?? Reflect on how to practice and strategically apply embodiment in your creative work. "Making theatre means to live enchantments…to invent mirrors of the world as we know it, or of worlds as dissimilar from reality as a fantastic delirium.” —Eugenio Barba Curious? In 2010, Damien Chazelle was just a student at Harvard with a dream to change the film industry. A few short years later, his movie La La Land raked in $446 million worldwide. It also took home 6 of the 14 Oscars it was nominated for, tying for the most Academy Award nominations for a single film ever, and it beat out every one of its competitors at the Golden Globes. Not bad for the new kid in town, huh? Damien chose not to buy into the idea that “the jazz musical was an extinct genre” or that because James Cameron and Steven Spielberg were already making movies, he should settle for a career doing something else. He committed to becoming a director and bringing La La Land to life, despite all the things working against him. Maybe you haven’t started your Personal Branding journey yet because you believe you’re too late to the party. Maybe you think your industry is too crowded... Or you believe your competition has your niche on lock, so there’s no room for you... Or you think there’s no chance that you’ll succeed when so many other people are already killing it online... Well, I’ve got news for you. There’s actually never been a better time to start. You have access to bigger audiences, better tools, and more opportunities than ever before. La La Land never would have become such a breakout hit if Damien Chazelle hadn’t written the script. And you’ll never know what’s possible for you if you quit before you get started. ???????? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???????????????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ???????????

I love the theatre. But not when innovating. Innovation theatre refers to activities that signal innovation is happening in an organisation but that never lead to impact. When there is theatre, you may notice that innovation workshops happen but never seem to go anywhere. There is activity, but no impact. But without impact, there is no innovation. Let’s talk about IMPACT and consider concrete examples of how you've innovated to: ??Achieve your organisation’s goals ??Improve your customers’ experience ??Enabled customers to get a "job" done better than before Need help moving from theatre to impact?
