The weight of expectation After 4 games for England at Euro 2024 Saka, Foden, Kane, and even Bellingham have repeated misplaced passes and shied away from making runs behind the defence, or taking a man on that they would automatically do in match for their club sides. Yesterday this malaise even infected the defence too with Rice, Stones, and Walker looking like novices instead of the world-class players they are. In my opinion, the current England players are showing all the signs of not being a united team fighting together for a shared goal. They are not at ease with themselves in this tournament. They fear failure. In business, when someone is promoted to the senior team, they will also often feel intimidated by the raised expectations that they assume will be placed on them to perform at a higher level. We often say to them “Don’t worry, just be yourself” as we attempt to allay those fears. But if the new environment doesn’t feel like a psychologically safe space to express their abilities, then they’ll retreat into themselves – and not show the capability that got them the promotion in the first place – and they will flail around and ultimately fail. Surely building the right culture in which the players can express themselves free from the fear of ridicule and dissent is the only job Southgate and his team must get right, given the quality of the players and their years of experiences in big games with their clubs. So, what’s the solution? Southgate, the pundits, and the fans need to create the feeling of being in a team in which it is OK to make an honest mistake, or to ask for help. Only once vulnerability-based trust is rekindled will the players relax and express themselves. Only then can they engage in constructive conflict about how best to play, while showing full commitment and accountability to the shared goal of bringing the trophy home. With a few days to go until the next match maybe they should fly in Patrick Lencioni for a lesson on the Five Dysfunctions of a Team?
