MyRA is an acronym for the Malaysian Research Assessment Instrument. This evaluation tool is used to assess the research performance of higher education institutions in Malaysia across eight crucial areas. It is a yearly assessment, and now is the time for data entry. My role as a member of the Research Management Centre (RMC) is to filter and validate information for accuracy. I am personally very enthusiastic about research, as I believe it has the power to make a positive impact on society. This belief was instilled in me by my alma mater's motto, "Berilmu Berbakti". I find satisfaction in conducting research and promoting a healthy research culture. In my opinion, the assessment is not just about the star rating. It is about the spirit of striving for research excellence and impactful research.? #researchexcellence #impactfulresearch

With an article for Star Biz 7, this week Center for Market Education CEO, Dr Carmelo Ferlito, came back to the topic of corporate fragmentation in Malaysia. 98% of Malaysia's firms are MSMEs, but they produce only 38% of the GDP. The new government plan to increase MSMEs access to capital markets is useful, but it will be effective only if accompanied by a change in corporate culture. Only a higher degree of consolidation can generate technical progress, social mobility and social protection.

Interesting article in the Irish Times today on the impact of population growth in Fingal. Bordering Meath in the West, it hugs the scenic coastline of the North County Dublin's penisulas looking east across the Irish sea and reaches as far as South Dublin in parts. Demographics tell us, the population increased by more than a third between 2006 - 2022, that it has a well serviced economic corridor accessible via the M50, M1, Dublin Airport and Dublin Port. That it accomodates a young & diverse population, 60% of whom are below the age of 44 and is set for continued growth. With a broad range of industries including; tourism, retail, hospitality, ICT, agriculture, public administration, commerce & trade, it will continue to need a well-balanced workforce. Fingal's Skills Strategy is actively seeking stakeholders to be at the forefront of meeting future demand. https://lnkd.in/eQCvf4yp
Fingal County Council works with local stakeholders to identify key sectors and potential skill shortages that may emerge in Fingal and seek opportunities to address these skills shortages working in partnerships with industry and the education sector. The key sectors identified in Fingal are: Commerce and Trade, Professional Services, Manufacturing and Pharma, Transport and Logistics, and Construction. A little of what we do: The Fingal Skills Strategy sets out recommendations to be carried out by both public and private sector partners. As with the entire spectrum of economic activity across the country. In 2021, the Skills Strategy Implementation Group (SSIG) convened to review developments in key sectors and drive activities to facilitate skills development and awareness of opportunities to enhance skills and training around the county. The Fingal Skills Strategy Implementation Group draws its members from education and training bodies involved in provision for the Fingal region as well as prominent employers from industry sectors included in the Skills Strategy. Organisations include the DDLETB, Fingal Chamber Skillnet, Dublin Regional Skills Forum (DRSF) and third level education providers. We are pleased to announce we are expanding our networks in the Construction, Pharma, Transport & Logistics and Services Skill Strategy Sub Group(s) sectors and are reaching out to you as a valued stakeholder to join our network. If you believe this is something that would benefit your industry and sector, we invite you to make contact with Alison Foster, Fingal County Council, Economic, Enterprise, Tourism and Cultural Department who will contact you directly to arrange an introductory meeting. Alison can be contacted at : [email protected] or 087 721 5073.

Amazing to think that I've been at Consulum almost three years now. As the post reflects, a dynamic period of learning across multiple geographies and differing styles of governance. Perhaps a useful time to reflect on two common challenge that I've seen across Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) in this period - 1. Enhanced integration of Communication and Investment functions At Consulum, our strategic governmental advisory support extends to improving strategic communications within government entities. My previous experience in investment promotion helped my understanding of the importance of a unified and effective messaging strategy at all organisational tiers, including local, state, and national levels. But a recurring challenge I've continued to observe in both large and small Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs), irrespective of their budgetary capacities, is the suboptimal coordination between investment and communications divisions. These departments are often perceived as distinct entities with minimal interaction. To remedy this issue, IPAs should prioritise fostering a symbiotic relationship between these teams. Investment professionals need to recognise the important role of communications in enhancing their outreach and targeting precision. Similarly, the communications team should improve their understanding of the IPAs' sectoral and geographical focus, collaborating closely to ensure that the right message is deployed in the right areas. 2. A refined approach to Investor Targeting Closely linked to the point above is the issue of strategic investor targeting. A prevalent issue among IPAs is a 'spray-and-pray' targeting approach, often spread thin over multiple 'priority' sectors. This leads to confusion for potential investors and an inefficient allocation of internal resources. IPAs can benefit from spending more time on identifying genuine opportunities within specific sub-sectors, particularly those where their region holds a competitive edge. Such a focused approach enables more precise and effective investor targeting, optimising resource utilisation. Some leading IPAs we have worked with are at the forefront of this evolution, leveraging advanced AI technologies for comprehensive mapping of entire supply chains in chosen sub-sectors prior to initiating the targeting process - focusing engagement and allowing for practical discussions from the onset. Some food for thought - would be great to hear any views on the points above...
