There’s no question about condemning violence in any form. But what’s your opinion on the practices of companies like United Healthcare and others—both in healthcare and beyond—towards the average Americans, their childrenand families? This post made my BP go up for its simplistic approach to a complex situation. The original write up reads beautiful, but it doesn't withstand the truth of the reality we live in. Brian had a chance to live out an American dream. However, his choice as a CEO took that dream away from many others. Have you lived through debilitating pain and/or permanent inflammation of your body that gives you very little respite for comfort? Have you experienced pushing through constant pain every single moment of your life as you get up to make a cup of coffee, get kids out of the house, go up and down the stairs? Both of my pregnancies were hard on my body. I was in regular pain, my body hurt every day, my joints cried, I rarely got a good night of sleep. With both of my pregnancies I was one of the technical leads for large size implementation projects. Some days the pain was so bad I felt my brain was on fire because trying to concentrate and address design decision while trying to ignore pain is an exquisite type of mental and physical torture that I don't wish on anyone, even on people I don't like. Thankfully my temporarily permanent painful experience was short lived. However, I recognize if that was indeed a permanent state, there would be no an opportunity to take steps/actions that would allow me to live out my American dream as a young adult immigrant to US. If I didn't have robust health that allowed me to utilize my education and propel myself forward, I wouldn't have an opportunity to move between Coasts, take on new jobs, travel, advance myself, etc. When UnitedHealth Group works to develop AI tools that speedups denial process for patient care to earn more money for the company, people like Brian are very involved and responsible for that. Writing up sugary stories and turning a man who lost his life to violence into an American angel does absolutely nothing other than creating meaningless fluff. Let's call spades spades, try to have difficult, but honest conversations, and attempt to solve healthcare problems in US. The tragic loss of life in this case is deeply troubling, and the act of murder must be unequivocally condemned. Our thoughts are with the CEO’s family, friends, and colleagues during this devastating time. While we grieve the individual tragedy, it is also an opportunity to critically examine the broader system they represented—one that many argue has significant structural flaws prioritizing profits over patients. This horrific act of violence should not overshadow an honest conversation about the systemic challenges in U.S. healthcare, where corporate practices often lead to unaffordable care, restricted access, and a focus on profit margins over public well-being. This tragedy reminds us that systemic issues in healthcare demand urgent attention. However, real change requires collective action through dialogue, advocacy, and reform—not violence. It is only by working together that that we can create a system that prioritises patients over profits. As we condemn the violence and grieve this loss, we must also recommit to addressing the systemic flaws in healthcare with compassion, determination, and a focus on peaceful solutions. #unitedhealthcare #brianthompson #healthcare

We are living in a dismal time. The most powerful two nations in the world. One can’t find a younger, decent, and hopeful leader for its future; the other one people even don’t have the right to vote. The benefits of government (politicians) & capitals (monopolists) are highly tied up together to the Federal system. What disappoint more is, social elites & celebrities, no one steps out to speak loud on righteousness so far from people’s side. When a society increasingly conducts injustices, it needs more anti-heroes. West and east, in both our past histories, martyrs facilitate the collapse of an empire and promote the newborn of the next era.

Otherwise, "good people" can find themselves stuck in bad systems. Social psychology teaches us that under "stress," "coercion," the influence of "perverse incentives," and various other factors, a kind of normalization of deviance, Stockholm syndrome, or "motivated reasoning" can warp people. UnitedHealthcare’s operations exemplify how bureaucratic isolation allows harm to persist while insulating workers from accountability. Employees are siloed into specialized roles, such as claims processing, prior authorizations, or provider negotiations, which focus narrowly on discrete tasks. This compartmentalization prevents workers from seeing how their actions contribute to broader outcomes, such as delays in patient care, denied treatments, or provider dissatisfaction. Policies framed as routine compliance normalize harmful practices, while strict adherence to cost-cutting protocols emphasizes profitability over patient well-being. The fragmentation of roles and information ensures that workers rarely witness the cumulative effects of their decisions, diffusing accountability and minimizing ethical reflection. This structure leads to real-world consequences like worsened patient health outcomes, administrative burdens for providers, and systemic prioritization of profit over care. Employees, often rewarded for meeting performance metrics rather than questioning ethical implications, cannot address or challenge these harms effectively. To mitigate these issues, UnitedHealthcare needs to foster transparency, empower workers to understand their role in the system and shift its focus from procedural compliance to patient-centered care. Such reforms could bridge the disconnect between workers’ actions and the company’s broader impacts, reducing harm and improving outcomes. The media focus on Brian Thompson's manner of death, while necessary, distracts from what other lessons could be learned from his life.

If we built a new healthcare system in the US from scratch, what would it look like? There's enough Agile and other process efficiency expertise on LinkedIn surely together we can get the bear-bones of a plan together which would address some of the many complaints about the current system (noted in the thread attached). Lets lead the country in taking collective accountability for the country's health outcomes and brainstorm together for a better system to rise "like a phoenix from the flames". Some action items, feel free to address in the comments: - Define healthcare in the context of patients receiving treatments, etc related to their health. - Process map of current healthcare system, inclusive of the variety of common and edge-case patients who utilize it, and the roles insurance, patients and doctors play in interacting with or facilitating the process at different stages - End-state goal. What should the system serve to provide in terms of deliverables and quality of life for the end user? What is the optimal outcome for the patient? - Value stream map of current healthcare process - How does a public program such as Medicare impact the current system? - How does employer-sponsored coverage impact the current system? - What would the inclusion of preventative care in general healthcare do to the overall health of the population over time? - Are there other areas of the industry than patient-facing where it could be made more efficient and lead to improved outcomes? - What studies currently exist which may help to determine better practices for a future-state system? - What are some aspects of the systems other countries use which could be explored to improve the current process in the US? - Listen to the Omnia and the Blizzard remix of Phoenix From the Flames and bask in the glory that is Justine Suissa's vocals on this legendary trance track.
