?? Politics Update | The German government has just passed the new #Kraftwerkssicherheitsgesetz (Power Plant Security Act). This legislation is built on two main pillars: 1?? Decarbonization: ? Construction of 5 GW of new H2-ready gas #powerplants ? Modernization of 2 GW #H2 ready facilities. ? Establishment of 500 MW pure hydrogen power plants and 500 MW long-term storage. ? Mandatory switch to hydrogen for these plants within 8 years. 2?? Supply Security: ? Development of an additional 5 GW of new gas power plants to step in during low wind and sun periods. ? These new plants will be predominantly located in southern Germany to enhance #gridstability. The first tenders are scheduled for late 2024/early 2025. Federal Minister Robert Habeck highlights that the new legislation is supposed to particularly leverage demand flexibility and #energystorage - preparing our #energysystem for infeed of more #renewables and ensuring a secure energy supply. ? https://lnkd.in/dtRhvSr6

The government will continue to explore zonal pricing due to its potential benefits. ? The new model will divide the UK into multiple zones, where electricity prices will reflect local supply, demand, and proximity to power stations. Additionally, zonal pricing will determine prices based on the marginal plant within each zone, as opposed to being set nationally. This will lead to fluctuating wholesale costs between regions, depending on the generation needed to meet demand. Some regions may find renewables and nuclear sufficient for demand at times, resulting in lower wholesale electricity costs, while others may require gas-fired generators, leading to higher costs. Inspired by the successes of similar models in Denmark, Italy, and Sweden, this reform intends to optimise energy production and encourage investment into renewable energy infrastructure close to densely populated areas. However, the zonal model has been the subject of criticism from both renewable generators and consumers, with some highlighting the unfair price disparities across regions. In Scotland, where around 25% of renewable generation occurs, a household can expect to pay less on their electricity bill than one located in the south of England, due to the high capacity of onshore wind situated there. Critics have also raised concerns that renewable generators in regions with high capacity may see reduced revenue from this reform, as well as inflate capital costs for renewable energy projects. #UKEnergy #REMA #ZonalPricing

Very blunt and straightforward assessment. It surprises me that the BESS study was even proposed. A few comments, 500 kV transmission lines have to be built in order to charge the 800 MW (4 hours) BESS. This is supposed to replace 2,000 MW of base load capacity. It will also need 2,000 MVAR of support capacity, but doesn't define from where? The link to the PJM study is in the article, worth reading. IRA and BIL laws require build in America, this is not addressed. Nevermind the cost. So simply put, they want to build out the BESS and charge is from outside of Maryland, probably from a natural gas plant in Virginia. This is exactly what California is doing, bragging about their renewable capability, but not mentioning that they are the largest importer of electricity from Arizona. Well worth a read! Key word is ‘rapid’. We can still achieve this but it requires full commitment from all stakeholders, leadership and skill. Glad to see a sensible range of interventions being discussed, acknowledgement of risks and costs, the absolute need for a systems plan and the transformation into a digitally-enabled system as an essential pathway. Good to also see post-2030 thinking being included.

It sets out the steps that need to be taken to deliver the Government's clean power mission and accelerate the UK's transition to Net Zero. It is great to see further acknowledgement of the role that geological hydrogen storage and flexible hydrogen generation will play in delivering low-carbon long-duration electricity storage.
