An intergenerational cycle of economic disadvantages weighs heavily not only on children and families experiencing poverty but also on the nation as a whole by reducing future national prosperity and burdening its educational, criminal justice, and health care systems. Our consensus study report, Reducing Intergenerational Poverty, examines the drivers of long-term, intergenerational poverty, identifies potential policies and programs to reduce it, and recommends actions to address gaps in data and research. Poverty isn't just about money or resources—it’s a complex issue tied to power, perception, and systemic inequality. What we see as "poverty" in one place might look very different elsewhere. But across the globe, the cycle of poverty is driven by those who control access to opportunities, locking entire generations into struggle. Understanding Poverty Poverty is often perceived differently than it truly is. Consider this perspective: - Poverty, except where there is a genuine lack of food and clothing, is more imaginary than real. - The shame associated with poverty—the fear of being perceived as poor—can be a significant and detrimental weakness. - In our current society, this shame often arises from prevailing fashions and societal expectations. Reflect on the real versus perceived aspects of poverty and how societal attitudes can impact our understanding of it. #Poverty #SocietalNorms #Understanding #PersonalGrowth #SocialAwareness

Still on Citizens' Engagement.. Poverty is a multidimensional process, extending beyond economic poverty, income poverty, or material poverty, which are significant. It also involves overcoming social exclusion, addressing what we call voice poverty, and tackling inequities in power distribution -( who has power, and who does not have). Addressing these multiple aspects of poverty requires the involvement of people themselves, using their own voices and knowledge. What is voice poverty? Voice poverty is about overcoming inequalities in power distribution. To effectively tackle these multiple aspects of poverty, it is essential for people to be involved, using their voices and knowledge. Citizen engagement is critical because it involves not only interacting with authorities and institutions but also mobilizing one's assets to build power within communities. This collective power enables people to act and make a lasting difference in their lives. #MultidimensionalPoverty #EconomicPoverty #IncomePoverty #MaterialPoverty #SocialExclusion #VoicePoverty #PowerInequities #CitizenEngagement #CommunityEmpowerment #LongTermImpact

Experiencing poverty during childhood can lead to lasting harmful effects in which poverty is passed on to future generations - a cycle that disproportionately affects Native American families. Our publication summarizes a workshop that identified policies and programs that can reduce long-term, intergenerational poverty among Native Americans in the United States. Key historical and structural factors that lead to entrenched poverty were examined as well as promising interventions for addressing them. Importantly, these sessions included a conversation with community leaders on their experiences with and work on intergenerational poverty as well as key data and trends on this topic. It's time to end the intergenerational cycle of child abuse and neglect, end the generational cycle of “cradle to prison pipeline”; and end generational cycles of historical racism and institutional bias. These are inseparable from economic inequality. As Health and Human Services systems relationally engage families as our partners; align and integrate services and supports; and intentionally live out principled leadership and practice behaviors, together we will influence new cycles of wellness.?
