A great first day from our Gulf-Alaska Knowledge Exchange being held in Anchorage, AK! Participants discussed the socio-economic impacts of oil spills to small-scale fisheries, tourism, and the subsistence way of life. Key takeaways focused on the importance of centering community needs and voices and prevention of oil spills as the most effective form of preparation. Looking forward to more great discussions in day two! #OilSpillResponse #CommunityResilience #OilSpill #OffshoreEnergy #OilAndGas #DisasterPreparedness

More good news for Canada's #marinebiodiversity Last week Fisheries and Oceans Canada closed all commercial and recreational bottom-contact fisheries within the #LopheliaReef area in order to preserve a "largely pristine cold-water live coral reef" habitat, which contains a high degree of biodiversity and is of cultural significance to the Kitasoo Xai'xais and Heiltsuk First Nations. ?? The Lophelia #coralreef is the most northern reef known in the Pacific Ocean, and only discovered in 2021. ?? Unfortunately, as with all reefs, Lophelia is susceptible to climate change. A one-degree change in temperature could be devastating (see Globe article). ?? Transparency is the greatest conduit for change in ocean governance and international fisheries management. ?? How can the international community set this principle in motion? Our CEO, Tony Long joined us for a?#ClimateWeekNYC?discussion—honing in on the three key policies needed for a sustainable ocean. ?? "I think it's absolutely vital that we secure a binding international agreement for vessel tracking,” says Long. “Without countries understanding where, and in what way a vessel has been operating, it becomes increasingly difficult to hold that vessel and its owners to account." ?? Watch to see what else tops his list of policies needed to bring about real change on the water. |?#UNGA?#OurCommonFuture

#GlobalGoals week aims to raise awareness for the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. I’m excited to spotlight Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Learn which countries spend the most on green fisheries subsides via my research (https://lnkd.in/d8FEuFSj) and who contributed the most to the WTO’s landmark Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (https://rdcu.be/dUoC4)?

FROM WETLANDS TO WEALTH: THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF CONSERVATION Conserving wetlands, like those in Papua New Guinea, offers significant economic advantages. Healthy wetlands enhance fisheries, agriculture, and tourism, driving local economies. By preserving these ecosystems, communities can sustainably harvest resources, ensuring long-term food security and livelihoods. Wetlands also act as natural water purifiers and flood mitigators, reducing the cost of artificial infrastructure and disaster recovery. Additionally, carbon credit programs like those from Sepik Wetlands & Peatland Limited provide financial incentives for conservation, transforming natural assets into economic wealth. These combined benefits highlight the value of integrating environmental preservation with economic development strategies. #SustainableEconomy #ConservationEconomics #PapuaNewGuinea

#Fisheries, #maritime and #coastalcommunities The world’s #oceans are the site of growing tensions. #Overfishing, climate change, resource extraction and other challenges are causing massive degradation of our marine environments, putting the livelihoods of coastal communities at risk.? C-SERC is a research leader in this domain, delivering projects on fisheries and aquaculture, maritime environments and societies and their associated political, cultural and economic practices. Our researchers are recognised for novel projects that address pressing sustainable development and marine conservation/restoration questions, from local challenges through to maritime security issues and global governance of the Blue Economy, with particular emphasis on Australia and the Asia- Pacific region. Projects: Valuing coastal fisheries and aquaculture in NSW and Victoria (Fisheries Research and Development Corporation)? These two discrete projects delivered a robust evaluation of the contributions that seafood production makes to Australian life. The research found that fisheries and aquaculture play a significant role in sustaining the vitality of coastal areas and deliver a wealth of economic, environmental and social benefits to coastal communities and beyond. These findings provide an evidence base for policymakers and the public to support the fishing and aquaculture industries in New South Wales and Victoria. Coral reef restoration in the Philippines (DFAT, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research)? Restoring coral reefs has the potential to become an important part of maritime ecosystem management, but the restoration process raises a series of governance challenges. This Philippines-based project aims to improve the effectiveness of reef restoration by exploring the underpinning social, economic and political influences that shape it. This research will make an important contribution to ongoing efforts to sustain reef ecosystems around the world.?
