As Beryl continues its path beyond the Texas coast into Texas, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of the first responders, weather reporters, and all of those ready to aid with relief efforts. Beryl made landfall at approximately 4 am (CT) in the early hours of the morning, directly impacting oil and gas operations in the Gulf as well as multiple onshore operations in the South. Fortunately, no stateside injuries have been reported, and companies have followed emergency protocols to minimize any short term and long term impacts to production. Oil and Gas Journal reported last week that preparations were underway. “On July 5, Chevron said it is monitoring the projected path of the storm and has transported nonessential personnel from some of its Gulf of Mexico infrastructure, without naming specific assets. The company said production from Chevron-operated assets remains at normal levels…Late July 4, Shell said all personnel at the Perdido platform have been evacuated and shut-in procedures have been completed.” Operations should resume as normal later today, tomorrow at the latest, as winds subside and debris is removed; and sites in northern regions are keeping a close eye on what the influx of rain might do to operations beyond the coast. But what is the Anchor project, exactly, and why is #Chevron marketing it to climate-focused audiences? The $5,700,000,000 facility, located 140 miles off the coast of Louisiana, is the first time an oil company has cracked the code on how to drill in previously untouched, dangerously high pressure deep sea environments. The technological achievement, which took #Chevron a decade, will allow the fossil fuel industry to reach underwater oil and gas fields up to 20,000 pounds per square inch pressures, a third greater than any prior well. Chevron estimates that Anchor could produce up to 440 million barrels of oil over 30 years, roughly equal to 187 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, or the same amount of emissions as running 499 methane gas plants in one year. But those millions of barrels are only the beginning of the company’s ambition; Chevron hopes Anchor will pioneer a new type of oil production that could yield billions of gallons of oil and gas from ultra-high-pressure fields across the world. Chevron’s ambition, however, is coming amid global calls for a massive societal transition away from fossil fuels. Scientists say such a transition is the only way to solve the worsening climate crisis, which is wreaking havoc on human health and the economy. So in order to achieve its dream of unmitigated oil production, Chevron must sell the public on a ludicrous idea: that drilling deep into the ocean floor is a climate solution.

The Deepwater Horizon refers to a massive environmental disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig Explosion: The Deepwater Horizon was a semi-submersible drilling platform leased by BP from Transocean. On April 20, 2010, a series of explosions ripped through the rig, killing 11 workers and injuring many more. The rig subsequently sank two days later. Subsequent Oil Spill: The explosion resulted in a massive oil spill, considered the largest offshore oil spill in history. Oil spewed from the Macondo Prospect well for nearly five months, until it was capped in September 2010. An update from Louise Morris, our Oil and Gas Campaign Manager! Louise has been in Canberra talking with members of Parliament about the increasing threat to our oceans from #seismic #blasting. Currently, two massive seismic blasting proposals are using Special Prospecting Authority (SPA) permits - which bypasses all the normal oversight rules and regulations - and allow for companies like TGS and Schlumberger to apply to blast over 45,000 square kilometres of our ocean for fossil fuels. Minister King has an opportunity, right now, to abolish these SPA permits and take out the worst of the worst operators of this seismic industry. The International Energy Agency warned in 2021 that ALL #newfossilfuel developments must stop if the world wants to prevent the worst effects of climate change. So why is #Chevron #greenwashing for deeper & high pressures drilling to produce more O&G which will increase Chevron’s pollution even more? The US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) has shared its latest update on oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the BSEE reports a significant improvement in the situation. Currently, only 3.35% of oil activities in the GOM are shut-in, a significant decrease from the 30% reported on 26 September. Additionally, the closure of natural gas production stands at 0.91%, down from the previously reported 17%.
