This Women's History Month, we're thrilled to highlight an incredible opportunity for Women-Owned Small Businesses (WOSBs) and Economically Disadvantaged Women-Owned Small Businesses (EDWOSBs). Last week, we had an incredible team-building session facilitated by the very talented folks from Kaha Mind at the Vance (YC W22) HQ. Our adventure? The NASA Moon Survival Challenge! It's not every day you get to strategize survival tactics on the moon. What started as fun and games turned into a masterclass on personalities, revelations about each other in the team, and striking a balance between your priorities and those of the team. Beyond its fun, this activity was a deep dive into the essence of teamwork and collaboration at Vance. Here’s what we took away: a well-informed, collaborative group can solve challenges more effectively with a structured problem-solving approach. We ended the session tighter as a team, each knowing our strengths and how to play them to our collective advantage. It's fascinating to reflect on our childhood career aspirations. As a kid, I dreamed of becoming an astronaut! Visiting NASA in second grade was the highlight of my year. Although I didn't become an astronaut (math wasn't my strongest suit ??), that dream significantly shaped my professional journey. Our dreams propel us forward and inspire innovation. Whether it's consistently smashing quotas or writing an honors thesis for fun, thinking big is the key to success. "What is something you are good at, that we aren't currently leveraging?" — NASA's chief of knowledge running the question during one-on-one meetings within the organization. NASA introduced this role after several repeated disasters, highlighting the organization's struggle to learn from past mistakes. I believe that implementing this practice with your teams could reveal untapped potential and open up new areas for growth that you may not have previously considered. It's important to acknowledge that there is often a natural perspective gap between a manager and their team regarding personal strengths and weaknesses, which should be discussed and addressed in a constant manner.
