Let's talk about blue jeans. ??
At the last Emerging Leader's class, Sean Reaves and Bob Paden gathered us all for this picture - we had not been forewarned it was going to happen.
As people threw elbows and tripped one another (kidding) to secure a place hidden in the back row because they weren't "picture ready," it dawned on me... this is a group of individuals who have been nominated by their employers, encouraged by peers, or self-started to be amongst other high performers in the county. Some of us wore collared shirts, some of us sported dress pants, and others (the majority) relaxed in more casual attire - and no one's intelligence, skillset, or ability was affected by their clothes.
My point is. At the end of the day, your attire at work really doesn't, and shouldn't, matter. Some of the most successful people I know wear t-shirts from high school with rips in their pants, paired with New Balance sneakers. Conversely, I've met people who wear ties everyday and are more incompetent than a wall.
Let's normalize wearing the clothes you are comfortable in, not the overpriced business casual looks of the past.
BTW...my LinkedIn profile pic ? I needed a picture to submit for the Emerging Leaders launch (they seemingly have a thing for pictures ??) and had never had a professional head shot. The posed torso, studio backdrop you see ? That is actually a selfie I took, sweaty from walking the dog, in a maroon sports bra, covered by a blazer...with a quick simple background swap on Canva. ?? Looking back ? I should have used the original selfie - that included the dog. ??
If you are actually good at what you do, people will remember your name, not whether or not you dressed to impress.
