Thankful Tuesday In the hustle and bustle of our busy seasons, especially in Graduate Medical Education, it’s easy to get caught up in the urgency of our day-to-day. Yet, it’s during these times that we have the greatest opportunity to be thoughtful—both for ourselves and for those around us. Let’s remember to extend a hand, offer support, and uplift our colleagues as they navigate their own challenges and growth. Investing time in our own development is vital, but equally important is taking a moment to connect and support others in their journeys. When we dedicate ourselves to growth and uplift one another, we cultivate a community of strength, resilience, and shared success. Together, we grow. ?? #ThankfulTuesday #GraduateMedicalEducation #GME #ProfessionalGrowth #Community #TogetherWeGrow #fulgme

The 2024 American College Health Association (ACHA) conference ends today. Here's my take on the sessions and proceedings: i. ACHA has a robust cross-sectional nationally representative 'people data' on college students, can see trends, and can make predictions on suitable health & wellness initiatives. As a former college nurse manager, this data is a goldmine if carefully curated and rigorously analyzed; can inform the U.S domestic student health policy. ii. ACHA has a solid data strategy task force streamlining several annual college student surveys such as wellbeing assessment, national college health assessment, sexual health services survey etc. Data driven organizations are effective organizations. iii. Secondary data studies are highly encouraged by ACHA's representatives given the need to assess intersections of emerging socio-contextual factors impacting college student's health. iv. ACHA's conference sessions had an incredibly wide array of alternative concurrent sessions ranging from 8-12 sessions per time slot on research, education, networking, advocacy, and quality improvement topics respectively. I consider this very generous. The broad topics were good for both professionals with or without research training to immerse themselves wherever they see fit. I enjoyed the interactions and engagement during the sessions. v. About 60 posters were showcased and presented on a wide array of topics from review, original research to quality improvement projects and advocacy statements. Yours truly, presented one. It was an interesting visual feast. vi. Some of the sessions I attended recorded high turnouts without a single male (except me) in the audience. Where are the men? Can somebody tell me why men are always very few in conferences? Is college health unimportant to a lot of men? Why were men also few in studies that presented their recruitment data? Well, blessed art thou amongst women! vii. For anyone considering graduate studies, do well to consider a college health research trajectory. ?? College students are the future, but I feel college health is often overlooked in research. College students are mostly aged 15-24 years, are vulnerable to substance abuse, sexual risk behaviors, & mental health conditions before requisite exposure to preventive health education. There is crucial need for more researchers in college health, more clinicians in college health, and certainly more allied health professionals from social works, public health, pharmacy, counselling, dietetics etc. to join college health career paths. ACHA needs your support! The future is now!! vi. Thank you American College Health Association (ACHA). A job well done! - End. #ACHA2024

Happy Education and Sharing Day! On this special day, let’s celebrate the importance of education, the joy of learning, and the power of sharing knowledge. Whether it’s through formal schooling, self-directed exploration, or simply passing on wisdom to others, education enriches our lives and empowers us to create positive change in the world. Remember, education is a gift that keeps on giving. So, comment below anything you may have learned this week or any knowledge you would like to share. Currently I am working through my Certified Health Specialist - CHS designation. Which is more in-depth knowledge surrounding critical illness, disability long term care and group benefits planning. Here are a few things I have learned that surprised me... - Currently 1 in 4 people over the age of 65 in Canada have dementia, that is expected to grow to 1 in 3 by 2030 - 40% of falls that seniors experience lead to a hip fracture, half of those people will never walk unassisted again - 40% of the residents of assisted living spaces are there now due to a fall
