"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." -John F. Kennedy I've accepted the Associate Director of Gift Accounting position with the UGA Foundation. It felt surreal to tender my resignation to Terry, but after being passed over for a promotion, there's no growth opportunity at Terry. It's hard to believe that November 1st marks my 3rd full year at Terry College of Business here at UGA. It's even wilder to think that this April will mark 8 years at UGA. During that time, I've worked at three units here at UGA: Central Finance, the College of Agriculture, and the Terry College of Business. As I prepare for my new role with the new team, I've reflected on the lessons learned over the last 8 years. There aren't just things I've learned to do; there are more lessons of what not to do. As leaders, we too often forget our origins; most of us have been lifted to our positions by many who are lower on the totem pole. Having a conversation that may be disappointing will be valued and respected much more than misleading, demure, or avoiding the conversation entirely. I look forward to working with the new team and giving the team opportunities that I can find. Although it's a very different culture, the messages and warm greetings I've gotten from the leadership signal that it's a good place to be. Today I traveled to London to see a potential client for 1 lunch meeting. Anyone who’s worked with me before will know I’m a sucker for an 4am National Express, and returning home with 6 meetings under my belt and ￡40 worth of Pret-A-Manger and a shit tone of jobs (Nicola Morse Thomas Hurley will remember those fond days) I’ve gone up in the world and treated myself to a ￡￡￡ train and met a Partner in a PE-backed consulting firm. ? My title changed today at McGuff Companies... Titles have never been a point for me. I’ve always believed it’s about who you are and the impact you make, not what a title says. I’m just one person working to make a difference, finding solutions, empowering others, and building a sense of team—because, ultimately, our goal is to get a little better each day. Titles feel like fluff and noise to me, and maybe that sounds naive, especially with my name on the front door, but it’s who I am and have been. In the Marine Corps, rank didn’t define respect for me; the person did. We were all in it together, on the same team, working toward a common mission. No one person's contribution is more or less than the next. That’s how I view things here, too. No matter what my title is, I’d still be here every day, leading with the same goals in mind. The biggest reward isn’t the title; it’s the smiles I see when I walk into a room full of teammates. Those smiles—even in the thick of challenges—mean the world to me. It’s because of the hard work, dedication, and resilience of these amazing teams that this title change happened, not because of anything else or that I did. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to my teams both current and past for making this journey worthwhile.
