Belonging makes beautiful sense ?? It’s a pleasure to share the recent celebration of the “Belonging” exhibition at The Pannett Art Gallery, showcasing the resilience and creativity of Eskdale School's students. Despite the rain, educators, pupils, local councillors, and business owners turned out to support The Ideas Foundation mission to nurture a New Creative Class. The Private View was a big success, with artwork sold on the night to fund the exhibition. Attendees were impressed by the students' maturity and professional-standard work. As Ian Bloor of Eskdale School noted, “The workshops really brought the kids out of their shells. There’s a need to have time and space to be creative without a set of criteria and tick list of what they have to achieve. The workshops showed what education could be.” This event, marking the end of an era for Eskdale students who are set to merge with Caedmon College, highlighted their skill and determination. Facilitator and Creative Advisor Michael Cockerham added, “Creativity is an emotional outlet, and it is no accident that society’s most exciting creatives are often very young. The Ideas Foundation gives them a chance to turn their ideas into visual realities.” As Eskdale School winds down, the success of “Belonging” and the potential of its students goes on. Armed with wellbeing skills, creative tools, industry exposure, and fond memories, these young creatives are ready to embark on the next stage of their academic lives. The “Belonging” exhibition was part of the Creating Connections programme, designed to combat the lingering aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initiated by Amos Bursary student Divine Agumba in collaboration with The Ideas Foundation, this project aims to address mental health issues, learning losses, and social isolation. This weekend, I visited the National Air and Space Museum in DC. ?? I came across these “tap to give” terminals—a fantastic initiative in theory, but it got me thinking… does anyone actually use them? I stood there for 10 minutes observing, and not a single person stopped to tap. Why? Here’s my take: 1. There’s no feedback mechanism. 2. No human recognition for making the effort to tip. 3. No gamification to show that your contribution matters or that you’re part of something bigger. 4. No counter to highlight how many people tipped before you, creating that "feel-good" moment of being among the generous. Personally, I always tip on terminals when a human is preparing my coffee or food ???—it feels personal and connected. But in a museum? Not happening. On my way out of their store, after spending $100 for my kids, I was asked if I wanted to make a donation. I said no. Why? Because earlier, I had already made a conscious decision not to tip, influenced by the impersonal experience of those machines. This got me reflecting on my own business, where tipping is central to the hospitality experience. For us, context is everything. We ensure that tipping is tied to an action, where a human is involved, making it personal, relevant, and engaging. What do you think? Is there a better way to encourage tipping in places like museums? I’d love to hear your thoughts! ??

Our clients College Track recently came to us for two distinct holiday cards for two audiences: one for donors and supporters that are invited to their annual benefit in May 2025, and the second that would be a more general holiday message, aligned to the design of their 2024 Annual Report. We loved the double-duty of the Save-the-Date holiday card, and to tie it together, we created a layered concept. A dieline creates a cut-out circle that showcases College Track’s logo through multiple layers—on the cover, peeking through a holiday wreath, on the save-the-date insert, and finally inside the card. Featuring an illustration style instead of photography, the approach of the general holiday card features a universal appeal that will make it relatable to all of College Track’s audience—donors, scholars, alumni, families, and employees. The design also features a blank area for personalization, so College Track’s CEO has a space for handwritten notes. I'll put it out there: After this particular project, I'd like to make a request that Ratkaj Designs design more holiday cards. Especially when they're as functional as this one! #PrintDesign #HolidayCards #NonProfitBranding

$75 million can go a long way to train and employ the chronically unemployed and prevent or end their homelessness. It can work wonders in research to improve the cognitive health of seniors, and be put to work to end the trafficking of children. I believe that it is time for charitable foundations to review their priorities and to consider reprioritizing their funding to have greater positive impact on improving the human condition. I am not suggesting that "The Arts" are not important and worthy of support. They are! But consider this... Those who are jobless, poverty stricken, homeless, suffering with Alzheimer's or another life-altering condition are not likely to enjoy museums and The Arts. I believe that this is the time to reprioritize! I do understand that many foundations are structured with guidelines and funding priorities set in place by their founding donor(s). Even then, many of these foundations can find and encourage programming that improves access to those who are dependent on vital human services. How about funding for entry fees and bus transportation for families and individuals wanting to visit and benefit from museums and other nonprofit arts and historical institutions? #charitablefoundations #nonprofits #humanservices #foundationgrants #grants

Folks, it’s Giving Day for Canisius University, and if you are interested in a unique, interdisciplinary program to support, consider Professor Yvonne Widenor’s Makerspace. For several years, and even through the pandemic, Yvonne has provided opportunities for students to gather for a variety of art and craft activities. I’ve seen firsthand where a diverse group of Canisius students participate in her Makerspace events. If these were simply “make n’ take” pastime activities, that would be worth supporting by itself. But more happens here: students learn by doing (“embodied cognition,” in educational jargon), meet other students, and often connect what they do in Makerspace with their courses, and with the community. With it’s Ignatian tradition, Canisius is especially prepared to expand Makerspace. In their first century, historian John O’Malley, SJ notes, “the Jesuits became the most prolific patrons and producers of arts in the world,” and have since become prominent in art, architecture, theater, and scientific instrumentation. They are, and encourage us to be, “contemplatives in action,” focusing our efforts in service of others. Yvonne’s participants have produced art to beautify the campus, and winterwear to warm those in need. I can assure you that your support will go to programs that enrich our students’ formation, and the lives of those around them. https://lnkd.in/gydjThy9

Though many (notably with economic privilege) romanticize moving to NYC to live out their dreams, it's not easy to sustain a life here. Let’s just say, it takes a lot of - not giving up - over and over again to see a bigger and better tomorrow in this city. CF currently finds itself at a unique and critical juncture. Within the past 10 years, we have invested in slow growth including (1) the breadth and scope of our artistic programs (2) the size and makeup of our staff and board, (3) the acquisition of our new permanent facility (which has more than tripled our footprint, but requires significantly more labor to operate) (4) the continued search for new funding opportunities with our increased budget while public funding continues to decrease; private funders are making shifts in priorities away from the Arts and Culture; and some are sadly sunsetting. I often find myself questioning if it was smart, to risk growing this incubator and artistic home during these trying times, and the answer is and will always be YES. As I watch a large number of peer organizations close their doors, I become more certain that we CANNOT STOP supporting the work that makes this City magical. Though it’s taking a lot of - not giving up - we remain committed to building a home for groundbreaking performances outside of Manhattan and grounded in our mission of supporting artists in their process of risk-taking. Personally, through my work at CFT, I’m learning that I moved to this City to contribute to the - not giving up - on Arts and Culture, to advocate for what makes NYC vibrant and inspirational. It’s inevitable and a key ingredient to revolution. And THE time to take those risks is now or never if we hope to create a bigger and better tomorrow across the globe. I’m deeply grateful and fortunate to be a part of an organization that will always be a part of THAT revolution. I am certain that with a donation of any size that is available to you****, this hope will manifest. https://ow.ly/AjBt50SmVsH
