When a friend is feeling down, how should you support them? A new paper in the Journal of Consumer Psychology questions the common wisdom that a heartfelt conversation is always best. The paper demonstrates that small gifts (like a cookie or a flower) are better at cheering up loved-ones than conversations. This occurs for two reasons: (1) gifts seem like a bigger sacrifice than conversations, which make people feel more loved (2) getting a gift surprises people and distracts them from their negative feelings.
