I am now adopting the official European Council rates for expert reviewing for all my requests from for-profit publishers (including journals from Elsevier, Springer, etc.). I will continue reviewing and undertaking editorial duties for free for fully open, non-profit journals. 1. For-profit journal/publisher rate: 450 EUR/day* 2. Non-profit journal/publisher rate: Free Corporations should not heavily profit from blocking access to research results enabled by public funding. By aligning with European Council rates, I aim to fairly value the time and expertise required for peer review while encouraging a shift toward more equitable publishing practices. I encourage fellow scholars to do the same and strive to abolish the predatory practice of the large publishers. * A typical paper review requires approximately half a day of work.

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job as a professor, is preparing grant proposals. I know, this is not what one typically hears from professors! BUT, for me, turning an idea into a convincing, well-supported plan ready for execution is nothing short of brain candy. The AMS is a proud partner of Research4Life, a non-profit that offers free or low-cost journal access to researchers in lower- and middle-income countries. To date, R4L has offered more than 230,000 research resources to more than 11,500 institutions across 125 countries. R4L released its first impact report this month, which highlights its achievements from the past two decades. Today, ten European research funding and performing organisations signed a Statement of Intent to support a collectively funded Open Research Europe (ORE) with a non-profit mission for the public good. ORE, the European Commission’s open access publishing platform, has been transformative since 2021. It offers cost-free publishing for grantees of EU funding programmes, supporting high-quality research through transparent, post-publication open peer review. By signing the Statement of Intent, the signatories commit to building a collectively funded ORE, enhancing equity, diversity, and transparency in open access publishing. This is the first Europe-wide initiative to develop ORE into a non-profit, large-scale publishing service, investing in open-source infrastructures. Our shared goal is to bring this service closer to the researcher communities and expand the eligibility to publish to all participating countries and institutions; to maintain and further develop a high-quality scientific publishing service and embed it in the #EUResearchArea; to support equity and transparency in scholarly publishing.
