Chick fil-A There’s a good chance you’ve been there. It may be a good place to eat but they’re REALLY good at what they do. Name a fast food restaurant that’s more polite? More clean and adds little touches like REAL flowers on each table. In 2018, they had 68,000 inquiries from prospective franchisees to open a restaurant in their area They accepted 100. That’s 0.15% of all applications. That’s 37 times more selected than Harvard ?? What am I getting at? Parents, you don’t have to compromise your child’s education. Just like Chick Fil-a doesn’t compromise their values. They could just say “Forget it! We’re opening on Sundays” and make a gazillion dollars. But, it’s part of their core values that they’re not willing to compromise. How many times have you WANTED Chick Fil-a on a Sunday? Do you go on Monday? I sure do. Whatever the school you choose for your child once they get to high school don’t compromise. The options are great Heck, you can even make your community college your child’s high school! Ah. My former x 3 employer (who recently bought my former x 2 employer, who recently bought my former employer) named and shamed here. See the problem there? Market concentration is hardly going to help things IMO. In seriousness though, I don't think this issue is necessarily Chartwells or any other caterer. I have seen much the same in not for profit environments. The root of the malaise is a 40 year drive to do the serious business of feeding children well, ever cheaper and more 'efficiently'. There has been chronic underinvestment in skills and equipment, plus enforcement and update of regulation = non existent. Better is possible - we see great school food every day! To make it happen you need to train up the workforce, beef up & enforce the standards, and fund quality & access properly. Lets get serious about this. Kids' health requires us to be serious, and ambitious.

The minimum we should expect from school meals is to provide a filling, delicious and nutritious meal at an affordable price. They should also provide an engaging learning experience, introducing students to new flavours and tastes in a stimulating environment, enabling students to build a healthy relationship with food. Yet still, food like this in school is the norm for most young people. Our The School of Artisan Food Food Education Mapping Project is looking at how students learn about food in school, including at meal times. From our early visits, it's clear how important school meals are in promoting the school food culture and supporting student health, but for many schools, they directly contradict the messages in the classroom and many schools feel powerless in enacting change. Let's hold these school food providers to account, build a connection between food education and school meals and demand better school food. Rosina Borrelli
