Recent statistics show over 10 million of Gen Z Indonesians are currently unemployed (Rosa, 2024). Some might say a lack of effort or unrealistic expectations. But the truth is, finding the perfect job often involves navigating a complex landscape with challenges on both sides. Here's the good news: This generation is known for its tech-savviness, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. You just need the right strategies to unlock your potential and land that dream job. 1. Forget the misconceptions Not all Gen Z Indonesians are looking for a "santai" (relaxed) job with a high salary. This generation craves meaningful work with a healthy work-life balance. Companies looking for a "no-nonsense" workforce might be overlooking a pool of talented and motivated individuals. 2. Focus on What You Can Control Instead of dwelling on unrealistic job requirements, focus on honing your in-demand skills. From digital marketing and data analysis to problem-solving and communication, develop skills that make you a valuable asset. Online courses, workshops, and even freelance projects can be a great way to gain experience and stand out from the crowd. 3. Embrace Your Strengths Gen Z's digital fluency and social media savvy are powerful tools. Leverage online platforms like LinkedIn to connect with potential employers and showcase your skills. Don't be shy about building a personal brand online that reflects your professionalism and passion. ?? As a bonus tip, it’s recommended to network with professionals in your desired field. Attend industry events or connect online to gain insights and potential leads. Remember, sometimes it's who you know that can open doors to new opportunities! ?? #ExcitingUpdate! ?? Thrilled to share that I've recently published an insightful learning brief titled "The Place for Market Systems in Early-Stage Jobtech Solutions: Lessons from the LIWAY-GoodayOn Jobtech" in collaboration with Gituku Ngene. This brief dives into the innovative partnership between LIWAY and Gooday Online, highlighting how Market Systems Development (MSD) approaches can strategically support early-stage Jobtech investments, particularly in challenging environments like Ethiopia. In the brief, we explore how the LIWAY program, through its systemic approach, helped GoodayOn—a digital platform connecting gig workers to customers—scale its impact and attract significant seed funding. This case study is a testament to the power of MSD interventions in fostering sustainable, large-scale market transformation, especially in underdeveloped ecosystems. #Keytakeaways include: # The importance of market systems analysis in guiding impactful interventions. # Balancing short-term results with long-term systemic change. # Encouraging innovation and adaptation to refine and scale effective models. # Leveraging pre-impact investments to attract further funding and support. # Engaging with strategic partners who share a commitment to sustainable impact. This journey with GoodayOn has been nothing short of inspiring, and the lessons learned are invaluable for anyone interested in market systems development and jobtech solutions. Curious to learn more? Dive into the full case study and let's continue the conversation on how MSD can drive systemic change in early-stage Jobtech initiatives. #Jobtech #MarketSystemsDevelopment #YouthEmployment #Innovation #SystemicChange #Ethiopia #LIWAY #GoodayOn Nicola Eriksson Fackel Edwin Kuria Ben Taylor, PhD Rachel Shah Gituku Ngene Blerta Peta Solyana Amsalu Subuh Kevin Mugenya LIWAY Gooday Online Al Abreha David OKUTU
Jobtech, the use of technology to enable, facilitate and improve people's productivity to access and deliver quality work, offers enormous potential to drive meaningful employment.?That is why LIWAY, a project focused on women and youth employment in Ethiopia saw an opportunity to cooperate with Gooday Online (GoodayOn), a for-profit digital platform / marketplace that connects gig workers to customers requiring domestic help and home repair services. Operated via a mobile app, the platform lowers entry barriers for women and young jobseekers in the labor market and enables high outreach. LIWAY applied market system development approach and supported GoodayOn to develop a profitable business model while simultaneously allowing delivery of low- and no-fee services for poorer and more marginalised users. The Future of Work for ASEAN Youth: Insights from a Volunteer Perspective Having volunteered for the ASEAN Youth Organization for the past four months, my eyes have been opened to the changing work environment in particular that we, as a generation of young people, are just entering. The future of work is a pressing issue among youth across Southeast Asia, whereby the technological underpinning, globalization, and shifting expectations about jobs set a new course for how we approach our working lives. Many of us are redefining what building a successful career means to us, away from the path of traditional life to a more flexible and innovative one. Perhaps one of the big transformations actually going on is that of the digital economy. Growth areas include remote work, digital marketing, and tech-based entrepreneurship. Young people across ASEAN leverage the digital shift through the acquisition of online course skills and the construction of careers with flexibilities offering global reach. This trend, catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, has made one thing crystal clear: digital work is here to stay and will be a permanent feature in the workforce, creating new avenues of growth for youth to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. But this transition has its own set of challenges. We often wonder if we have the right kind of skills to stay relevant in a world that is rapidly adopting automation and artificial intelligence. While the ASEAN governments are pushing for digital literacy, ultimately each one of us is personally responsible for our learning and upskilling. That includes not only technical skills but also soft skills like problem-solving, creativity, and adaptability, increasingly important in rapidly changing work environments. Another defining factor that shapes the future of work is the gig economy. In general, more young people in ASEAN turn to freelance careers and find opportunities as writers, designers, and programmers, among others. As much as freelancing offers independence and flexibility, it lacks the stability that traditional employment offers. As ASEAN youth, it is important to consider the pros and cons of gig work and continue pushing for policies that protect freelancers by extending benefits such as health insurance and job security. Ultimately, the future of work will be about navigating this new reality with resilience and adaptability. As youth from the ASEAN region, we are in a privileged position to welcome technological advances with open arms, while at the same time making sure our voice for fairer policies translates into long-term career sustainability. By being proactive and keenly learning all the time, we will be in a position to shape a future in which we not only survive but thrive in the modern workforce. While there are numerous programs designed to equip women with digital skills, a critical gap remains—bridging the transition from skill acquisition to securing actual job opportunities. This gap is largely due to limited access to global markets, where African women, despite having the necessary skills, lack platforms that connect them with international clients. Hire Emmie addresses this significant challenge within the global digital economy: the underrepresentation and underutilization of African women in the tech workforce. Most African female tech talents struggle with visibility in a competitive market dominated by well-established freelancers and agencies from more developed economies; and existing freelance marketplaces are either too broad, lacking a focus on specific skills and industries, or they fail to address the unique challenges faced by African women, such as negotiating fair pay and securing consistent work. Additionally, freelancers in emerging markets often experience professional isolation, which can hinder their career growth and access to mentoring opportunities. Our goal with Hire Emmie is simple but significant: connect these talented women with businesses, from small local startups to big global enterprises, who need top-notch admin, sales, and marketing services done right. By zeroing in on tech roles that these women are trained for but often overlooked, Hire Emmie acts as a critical link. We're here to make sure African women in tech don’t just find jobs but kickstart careers that are fulfilling and sustainable. It’s about opening doors to new opportunities and helping these women prove they’re an essential part of the global digital landscape. Follow Hire Emmie to stay up to date on our launch. #HireEmmie #Genderlensinvesting #AfricanFemaleTechTalent #TechSkills #AfricaWorkforce #WomeninAfrica #WomeninSTEM

?? Why Are We Still Undervaluing Filipino Talent? ???? It's troubling to see so many companies outsourcing work to Filipino professionals with the mindset: "We can save by hiring Filipinos." Imagine paying someone $1.50 an hour ?? while expecting top-tier results. We understand starting rates may be lower for newbies, but it must be fair ??. Exploiting those eager to learn is unacceptable. Even with extensive experience and expertise, many Filipino freelancers are still undervalued ??, often being paid far less than other nationalities for the same work. Why not offer Filipino professionals rates that reflect their skills and contributions? It's not uncommon to see posts offering higher pay to others, while Filipinos, despite matching or exceeding qualifications, are overlooked ??. Many freelancers—and even full-time employees—take on side jobs just to make ends meet ????. I know one graphic designer, exceptionally talented ??, who was upfront about needing $9 per hour to support his family ??????. Instead, he was offered $6, with the promise of a raise after proving himself. After weeks of consistently excellent work, he only received a $0.50 raise, and now, he's seeking higher-paying side jobs to survive. Here’s the truth: It’s not always about poor performance or dishonesty ??. Sometimes, it’s a matter of companies undervaluing the talent they’ve hired. I’ve seen this first-hand, and it’s frustrating. It’s time to recognize the value of experienced Filipino Amazon VAs, Managers, and Specialists. It’s not "cheaper" to live in the Philippines ??, especially when you’re the breadwinner or have a family to support. We deserve wages that reflect our skills, hard work, and dedication ??—just like any other nationality. ?? Employers: if you value your employees, pay them what they’re worth. We’re not just saving you money; we’re driving your success ??. #FilipinoTalent #FairPay #FreelancersRights #AmazonVA #Outsourcing #FairWages #RemoteWork #EqualOpportunities #ValueYourEmployees #FreelancerLife #Philippines
