I'll be reposting anything on my feed about maintaining open #data access from federal programs/sites that are being dismantled under the new administration (especially #environmental and #climate data). Keeping information accessible is a critical tenet of democracy. Since 1966, the Freedom of Information Act has ensured that Americans can hold the federal government accountable through transparency. #FOIA isn't a constitutional right, but it's a law that aligns with #democratic principles of open government and is an essential tool for all of us to hold government agencies #accountable.

OEDP is a member of the Public Environmental Data Project, where we've been working for the last two months to archive critical federal environmental data. As of this morning, the Climate and Environmental Justice Screening Tool is no longer open or accessible—but we have all of the data and code backed up. Not only have we refreshed all existing indicators, but we’ve also added brand-new data on drinking water access and safety. ?? Why does this matter? Through a renewed push for projects in both the planning and design phase to promote equity, community engagement, and sustainability, the Department of Defense considers impacts to not only the community inside the fence-line but the community beyond. Tools like US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s EJ screening tool is vital for project teams in assessing the potential impacts of actions that push our military toward a more sustainable future.?For example, when considering the impacts of a fully electrified portfolio, questions such as: will the current utility infrastructure support the increased load? Will neighboring communities experience more brown outs? If the infrastructure is not currently in place, who is bearing the financial burden of upgrades in the short and long-term? ?are vital to meet the Federal Sustainability Plan’s objective of promoting sustainable actions that strengthen the vitality and livability of the communities in which federal facilities are located.
