LA Fires-When a Community Faces the Flames We recently moved to the Altadena/Pasadena area, and I’m currently 8 months pregnant ????. From the moment we arrived, this community embraced us with kindness and warmth that I will never forget. Feeling so welcomed as newcomers makes the devastation from the recent wildfires even more heartbreaking ??. My husband, who works as a principal in Altadena has witnessed the immense impact of these fires firsthand. Many students can’t return to their damaged schools, families have been displaced, and countless lives have been uprooted. This tragedy isn’t just about the destruction of buildings; it’s about the people, their stories, and the futures now hanging in the balance. Many folks are learning that Altadena is one of the first cities in California to let Black folks purchase homes. Octavia Butler, Jackie Robinson, are just a few to name. It was also the home to a thriving black community post-slavery. The destruction of this community is a loss not only for the current residents but for the rich history and legacy that it holds. The impact of these fires goes far beyond just physical damage; it takes an emotional toll on everyone involved. Families are displaced, businesses are lost, and entire neighborhoods are left in ashes. Despite the devastation, Altadena and all of LA has shown remarkable resilience. I've been stuck in traffic this weekend due to people donation and volunteering traffic. These actions defined by its compassion and commitment to helping one another, even in the toughest of times. Whether it’s neighbors stepping up to offer aid or strangers lending a helping hand, Altadena’s spirit of solidarity shines brightly even in adversity. If you’re looking for ways to help, I encourage you to get involved. There’s a relief support spreadsheet that connects donors directly with those in need—it’s an easy way to make a difference. Stress reduction, restraint and seclusion I am delighted to partner the Alliance agaisnt Seclusion and Restraint for this web conference. It is an opportunity to understand in an empathic manner the approach to stress management and stress reduction. I will be be speaking about how we can reduce and eliminate restraint by creating arousal regulation and co regulation which is the cornerstone of the low arousal approach.Critical to this is the double empathy approach where we change our behaviour in the first instance. All of the key contributors will focus on reducing unpredictability and chaos for the people we support. #mentalhealth #restraint #seclusion #lowarousal #wellbeing #trauma #schools #autism #adhd
We are delighted to be partnering with the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint for this event, an organisation whose work in the US campaigning against restrictive practices is inspirational and impactful.
