When I stepped into one of New Delhi’s first and only zero waste colonies, I was welcomed by a community that has been living and breathing sustainability for the last 5 years. United in their shared purpose, this close-knit neighbourhood of 250 households came together, committed to create change. Reminding us that even with the smallest of actions, we can make a world of a difference. Here, every action is a step towards a greener tomorrow: * Sorting green waste with intention, and transforming it into Earth-enriching black gold. * Turning plastic trash into renewed, repurposed, reusable treasure. * Taking individual responsibility and working towards a common goal as a community. This collaborative effort has helped save a heaping 6 lakh kgs of waste from filling more of our landfills from becoming ever-mounting dumping grounds. It goes to show that we can work through every maze, create solutions for every problem, and surpass every challenge as long as we have hope and the will to walk the path of individual impact, especially if a woman is leading the way. "A Carbon-Neutral Baby? Yes, You Read That Right!" We often talk about sustainable businesses, green tech, and carbon-neutral buildings… but what about a carbon-neutral life from Day 1? Meet Aadavi, the world's first carbon-neutral baby. Born not just with love and hope, but also with a vision—a vision where every tiny footprint (quite literally!) on this planet is balanced with care for the environment. So, how is Aadavi carbon-neutral? Her parents, Dinesh and Janaga, have planted 6,000 trees around their home in Tamil Nadu, India. These trees ensure that the carbon dioxide produced through Aadavi’s everyday activities—breathing, playing, and growing up—is entirely balanced out. But their journey doesn’t stop there. Before welcoming Aadavi into their lives, this remarkable couple founded an NGO called Seerakhu, dedicated to driving India towards carbon neutrality. In just two years, they’ve planted 400,000 trees, regenerated forests, and inspired countless others to take action. This story isn’t just about one baby or one family. Creating awareness series for Cleaner Communities with HCL Foundation's Zero Waste Urban Villages Project The?Aware: Awaken: Achieve?program was successfully organized under the?HCL Foundation's Zero Waste Urban Villages Project?in Rabupura Village, Greater Noida implemented by Hand in Hand Inclusive Development team, Ward No.5, Lakshmi Nagar. This series of initiative aimed to create mass awareness around the concept of?"My Waste, My Responsibility"?and emphasize the importance of adopting sustainable waste management practices at the household level. With over 77 enthusiastic participants, the program focused on promoting the use of twin bins to streamline waste segregation at source and improve cleanliness. Women participants actively engaged with our team, including the Co-ordinator and community mobilizer and discussed methods of waste segregation, home-based composting also. Together, we are driving tangible improvements in health, sanitation, and environmental stewardship.
