Recently, there have been much debate about the relevance of international law and its justiciable nature. Understandably so, given recent events particularly as it relates to the #ICJ Advisory Opinion in response to questions by the UN General Assembly in relation to the Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. Some are of the view that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) legally-binding rulings or advisory opinions are meaningless because of the lack of enforcement mechanisms. However, I am of the view that the #ICJ decisions as a source of international law [see Article 38(1)] is not meaningless because the enforcement of its rulings or advisory opinions is the responsibility of the state parties who’re signatory members of the United Nations charter and therefore, have a responsibility to operate in good faith — pacta sunt servanda — and respect international law. #IR #ICJ

This session, the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly faces a critical decision on whether to take action on the International Law Commission's draft articles on #CrimesAgainstHumanity. Hungary has consistently advocated for the convocation of a diplomatic conference to move these discussions forward and bring the articles closer to fruition. The future convention fills a major gap as crimes against humanity are currently the only atrocity crimes without a dedicated convention focused on their prevention and punishment. It was an honor to contribute to a discussion that could shape international law for years to come.
