The life and legacy of Ella Dobson, who retired from Johns Hopkins APL in 1998 after a 36-year career, bridges two national celebrations of heritage and gender: Black History Month and Women’s History Month. https://jhuapl.link/5ms Dobson, who died in February at the age of 85, applied mathematical precision to explore the mysteries of the ocean’s surface, and her insightful analyses revealed hidden truths within sea waves. Her groundbreaking work in ocean remote sensing — gathering data about the seas from space — provided a legacy of inspiration for future scientists, engineers and mathematicians. Dobson’s son, Hans, said he remembers his mother focusing “not so much on color, but on women’s empowerment. She was one of the only women out of the group full of men for a while. So, she had a lot to prove, and she proved it by her actions, her expertise.” However, he added, the significance of her race in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field was not lost on her. “There was no doubt that she wanted people of color to know that anything, any career, is possible; that there was a wider field of circumstances that you can explore. She had these sayings: Nothing can stop you. Never stop learning. Don’t stop until it’s done correctly. Always be organized. We’ve launched applications for our third cohort of “History to Shape History (for the better)”! We’ve made a bunch of improvements since our first launch. Most notably, the format now very closely mirrors Oxbridge-style history education with: ?? Self-paced exploration: Dive deep into intriguing historical topics using our curated resources or your own research. ?? A weekly mini essay: Read around the topic and write up your hot takes. ?? Small group, tutorial-style discussion call: Weekly check-in and discussion with an advisor and 3-5 peers; develop your critical thinking in conversation with intelligent, interesting, like-minded teens. ?? Optional additional talks and Q&As with professionals who studied history. Of course, unlike conventional education, our content and programmes are focused explicitly and directly on helping you to explore how you can use the lessons of history to make a positive impact and steer humanity onto a better path. It’s running from 27th July to 1st September, 2024 (5 weeks over the Summer holidays). Smart, curious, and ambitiously altruistic students aged 15-19 studying history in the UK or Ireland who haven’t started university are encouraged to apply! During the spring, I completed my thesis, which tied together fantastically fun and educational years of studying applied mathematics ?? ???? The work was dedicated to a frequently overlooked environmental issue - underwater noise. It consists of signal processing and statistical methods to try to detect and quantify boat-produced noise.
