Did you know that around a quarter of the wastewater that arrives at the plant for treatment does not need to be treated? This is due to the world's seriously deficient sewer networks. STEP (Septic Tank Effluent Pumping) also named as Liquid Only Sewer is a method of moving wastewater to a location for either treatment or dispersal. Utilizing this method of sewer collection has many advantages over other technologies such as grinder or gravity systems. Below are two photos from a 40 year old STEP sewer system located in Glide, Oregon. The PVC pipe was under operation for nearly 40 years and has almost zero solid build-up inside of the piping network. The pile of dried solids is an entire year worth of solids collected from pumping out the tanks in the STEP collection system and teated at the extended aeration plant. The restoration of Montreal City Hall required the installation of a stormwater retention system capable of managing a large volume of water within strict space constraints near the historic building. The new pipe material can be ductile iron, polyethylene, PVC, or GRP. During installation, the new pipe is held in place within the original pipe using spacers with the void between the two pipes grouted upon installation completion.
