Thanks to the IOC Young Leaders Programme’s 4-Week Learning Sprint, this time we’re challenged to share an initiative that speaks to us and uses sports as a tool to contribute to the United Nations SDGs. One initiative that really inspires me is the Fair Play Award, by the Hungarian Olympic Committee, a recognition with a long-standing legacy in Hungary that celebrates sportsmanship, integrity, and respect. Since 1967, this award has recognized those who exemplify fairness in every interaction—celebrating honesty, respect, and compassion in sports. The most recent categories of this award include Act of Fair Play, Lifetime Achievement, and Promotion of Fair Play. Growing up as an athlete in Hungary, competing in alpine skiing, windsurfing, and football for over 10 years, I was raised by my parents and taught by my coaches to approach every moment—whether it is in sports with teammates, competitors, or anyone involved in general—with fairness and honesty. These values have shaped my sports journey, making fairness, and respect the core of how I view and engage in sports. The Fair Play Award resonates deeply with me as it also supports SDGs like Good Health, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Strong Institutions. As a young leader and ambassador in sports, I am passionate about promoting these values globally. Fair play should be more than a guideline—it should be a global commitment that unites us all. Sport Transparency Index is a Project funded by Erasmus+ Programm, lead by SIGA?and with the overall objective creating the means to independently evaluate and benchmark sport stakeholders in relation to their transparency using universally applicable and appropriate criteria. ? In its second year of implementation the 11 entities which are part of the consortium, gathered in Warsaw last Tuesday (July 16th) for its 4th partner meeting. The work and discusión during the meeting were focused on the conclusions of the pilot study (WP2) and the design of the training package (WP3). Unified Representation for All Mountain Bikers in Austria At the IMBA Europe Summit, the keynote "4 pillars of a MTB strategy for Austria" highlighted the essential role of community in the mountain biking strategy for Austria. The "Community" pillar focuses on creating a strong, united, and representative mountain biking community. By consolidating all mountain bike clubs under the umbrella of "IMBA-Austria", we not only leverage synergies but also strengthen our advocacy efforts. A central contact point is established, serving as a communication hub, coordinating events and initiatives, and amplifying the community's voice to policymakers and the public. Our goal is to establish a representation for all mountain bikers in Austria, regardless of skill level or age, from children to grandparents. A special focus of our strategy is on professional training for local trail builders, conducted within the framework of the DIRTT.eu Project and the ITRS (International Trail Rating System). Grow Sport Announcement: iGolf Review and Tailored Strategy for Clubs At Grow Sport, we’ve been carefully reviewing the newly launched iGolf initiative by Golf Ireland, designed to offer non-club members access to an official handicap. While the debate over whether this should have happened will continue, the fact is that it’s now live, and we can’t afford to sit back and wait to see what unfolds. While this presents a valuable opportunity to attract new players, we also recognise the concerns many clubs, particularly smaller ones, have regarding the potential impact on their membership base. Mark Ruddy, our CEO, brings a wealth of experience, having worked with a similar model in the UAE under the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Membership. "While there are clear differences between Ireland and the UAE in terms of climate and club structures, there are key lessons and strategies that can be applied to help clubs capitalise on iGolf without undermining their current membership." With over 350 golf clubs across Ireland, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, we recommend a holistic approach that takes into account your club’s size, financial position, location and community dynamics. Here are a couple of suggestions that might help clubs navigate this shift: ?? Evaluate Membership Structures: Clubs should consider reviewing their membership pricing and benefits. ?? Focus on offering value beyond a simple handicap, including social engagement, competition access and benefits, which iGolf cannot replicate. ?? Engage with iGolf Users: Clubs can use iGolf as a stepping stone, creating events, offers, or social rounds to introduce iGolfers to the club environment. This way, casual golfers can experience the full benefits of membership. ?? Collaboration: Engaging with nearby clubs to discuss strategies can help form a united front in your community. Sharing ideas and solutions will ensure clubs within the same region maintain strength and mutual support. Ultimately, these are just a few suggestions. Every club must develop a strategic plan that aligns with its unique circumstances.
