How often do you look back and let history & legacy influence your next move? This evening we watched a video that we've recently helped our local rugby club produce, to celebrate their centenary year. Our videographer has done a great job putting together an insightful documentary of the past 100 years of Banbury Rugby Club. With photos, videos, and press cuttings showing the history over the past 100 years. The black & white pictures from the 1920s, 30s, 40s & beyond. The changes that war brought about. The changes that each decade inevitably brought about. It's incredible to think that clubs held together by the local community can have such longevity. What a thing to celebrate and look back on! Since getting home my history focus continued having watched most of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Again, what a reminder of the power of sport. The power to bring people together. As a force for good. Over so many years, the history is incredible. It's so easy to forget to be influenced by history. To forget that you're carrying the torch for whoever came before you. To forget that what you do now is very much connected to the years, decades and centuries that have passed. To give your next move, your current & future decisions some gravitas, remember that people in the future will also be looking back. Looking back at you & your contribution. And it's no longer grainy, black & white footage they'll see, they'll get to see you in perfect HD clarity! Especially given the rarity that someone isn't taking photos or videos of you most days & weeks! I used to ask myself often, what would my Grandfather do? I looked up to him and loved the thought of keeping him alive somehow through my behaviour. Whether it was to refuse to wear a shirt without a collar, just like him, or to wake up ridiculously early and work 15 hour days, just like him, I was keen to keep his influence on me alive. Because history matters and deserves respect. Whatever you're up to this weekend, give a thought or two to history before you act. And remember, whatever you're doing, you're also creating history that others may look back on in the future. #everydays

Do you have 4 minutes? This substack article by Adam Grant will shift your thinking, on competition, on teamwork and on solidarity. Surely, you have 4 minutes for that! "The ethos of friendly competition at the Olympics goes further: you root for your team without rooting against your opponents. If it can happen in the zero-sum world of sports—where winning requires someone else to lose—it can happen anywhere." #AdamGrant #CompetitionMindset #TeamworkMatters #SolidarityInAction #PositiveCompetition https://ow.ly/U5we50T3z6l

?? British long jumper Jazmin Sawyers shares her journey of "grieving" her chance to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after rupturing her Achilles and the importance for athletes to discover an identity beyond sports. Her story perfectly illustrates the profound impact of athletes' identity loss on their well-being. ?? This resonates deeply with our FWO project and the PhD project of Korneel Schepers, where we focus on supporting elite athletes throughout transitions, guiding and empowering them through the process of identity change. ?? For more information ?? https://lnkd.in/e2w5-MHc ?? Check out Jazmin's inspiring interview here: https://lnkd.in/emUnMKra ?? "It was the emotional pain that hit me the hardest. I'm trying to push the message that it is so important to have an identity outside sport, outside of just being an athlete. Because if that's taken away from you by something out of your control, like a freak injury, you still need to know who you are and be confident that you have value and that you have a lot to offer. Because if you feel the only thing you have is being an athlete and that's gone, then you feel you have nothing. So I think cultivating that identity outside sport, when you're healthy, is really important, so you have those other aspects of yourself to lean on if sport isn't an option anymore." ?? ?? Watching the US vs Serbia in Men’s Basketball last night reminded me of why we as a nation are glued to our televisions watching athletes from the United States perform for the red, white and blue. Sports in that space, shows us we can all come together regardless of our race, gender or political affiliation. Patriotism actually looks the same when you put USA on it. That sentiment beautifully captures the unifying power of sports. Events like the US vs. Serbia basketball game showcase not just athletic talent but also the ability of sports to transcend differences and bring people together. The shared experience of cheering for a common goal fosters a sense of community and national pride. When athletes wear the colors of the flag, they embody the spirit of unity and collaboration, reminding us that, despite our diverse backgrounds, we can rally around something greater than ourselves. It's a celebration of not just the game, but of the values that sports can inspire in society. Let’s try and remember that feeling and sentiment after the games are over.

Video is a great medium for charities wishing to highlight their impact, and this is a great example! I was sent this by Kieran Connolly and wanted to share it to show what can be achieved with visual storytelling using video. A glossy report full of professionally captured images, a well developed written narrative, case studies, and testimonials would do a fantastic job of showcasing the work and successes of Sports Fun 4 All (and I'd recommend investing in that, if it's not already being done) but seeing and hearing it in video form like this makes for a more emotional and human connection. Not only that, research and anecdotal evidence suggests that people increasingly prefer to consume content in the form of video. Anyway, here it is, take a look and see for yourselves https://lnkd.in/e-FJpqtb And well done to Keiran and team, this kind of community sports initiative is really important - I know from a previous connection to AFC Fylde Foundation in Lancashire that it's not just about getting young people into physical activity and allowing them to develop sporting skills, it helps in all sorts of other ways too, from fostering a sense of community, teaching social skills, healthy eating, and keeping them out of trouble, to giving parents and carers some respite and enabling young people to acquire skills and behaviours that will boost employability in later life.

Happy #WorldFootballDay ?? to all who celebrate, and billions do! On May 7, the UN General Assembly declared May 25 World Football Day. In passing the resolution, it acknowledged the "beautiful game's" global reach, its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy and recognized that the sport creates a "space for cooperation.” As noted by this Statista chart, there is room for growth in North America. We will likely see a major spike in popularity here in 2026, when the World Cup arrives. Additionally, the Relevent Sports Group case, which seeks to allow regulation games (not friendlies) of foreign pro leagues to be played on US soil, could be the catalyst for major changes in our domestic sport consumption habits - by consumers, consumer brands and broadcast outlets. #sportbusiness #futbol #soccer

In this episode of Bloomberg The Deal, Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly sit with tennis champions Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss to discuss the current buzz around women’s sports. King and Kloss, the dreamer and builder (respectively) behind Billie Jean King Enterprises, tell the hosts about their investments in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angel City Football Club, the story behind how they helped launch the Professional Women's Hockey League and the lessons they think athletes should learn about the business of sports. Key insights: ???Business Acumen is Vital: Athletes must learn the business of sports to advocate for themselves and ensure sustainable careers post-retirement. Understanding financial dynamics enhances their negotiating power. ???Media Visibility Matters: An increase in media coverage for women’s sports reflects growing interest and investment potential, showing that visibility translates to opportunity and funding. ???Collective Power: When women athletes unite under a single banner, they enhance their bargaining power and visibility, as seen in the successful formation of professional leagues. ???Investment in Women’s Sports: The involvement of wealthy investors signals a belief in women’s sports as a viable business opportunity, moving away from viewing it as a charity. ???Mentorship and Guidance: King’s mentorship highlights the importance of knowledge transfer from experienced athletes to the next generation, fostering a culture of empowerment. ??Long-term Vision: Sustainable growth in women’s sports requires a long-term commitment from investors, as initial losses are common but necessary for eventual success. ???Cultural Shifts: The increasing acceptance and integration of women in sports reflect broader societal changes, encouraging future generations to pursue their dreams in athletics.

Brighton women football team are hoping to have a purpose built stadium by the 2027/28 season. Here's 3 reasons why purpose-built stadiums can help women's football grow: 1. Most WSL teams currently share their grounds with men's football or rugby teams. By having their own grounds they don't have to worry about scheduling around other fixtures and have a stadium where they are the priority (not treated like a second class team) 2. They can have the ideal size of stadium to continue to grow. ?Not too small (like Chelsea's Kingsmeadow) and not too big (like trying to fill Old Trafford right now). In time, I'm sure they will consistently fill the main stadiums, but it's unreasonable to expect crowds go from a few hundred to tens of thousands in the short term 3. They can be built with a different fan base in mind. From more female toilets to more family friendly facilities such as food portions designed with children in mind. I hope Brighton have spoken to their fans and get the chance to consider all the possibilities, rather than follow the current blueprint but smaller. Follow me for more on women's football. #WomensFootball
