A quick glimpse of the Final review and public exhibition ongoing for Just Transitions Sheffield, projects by our MA Urban design students at Sheffield School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield, co-created with local communities organisations: SADACCA and Regather Food Cooperative. Detail description: Across the two semesters, the Urban Design studios at University of Sheffield School of Architecture worked with the theme of Just Transitions together with affected communities and their urban territories of concern. Just Energy studio has been working with SADACCA, African and Caribbean association situated in a historical steel industries building in Wicker since 1986 where the outdated industrial building stock is in need of transformation in order to adapt to a net zero future. Just Nature studio, has been working with Regather, a cooperative exploring alternative food systems and nature based solutions in Sheffield to increase biodiversity of urban and peri-urban areas while increasing resilience of citizens. The MAUD Studios 23/24 explore how architecture and urbanism can take responsibility, and actively engage with 'Just Transitionsacross the localities they are rooted in. Urban Design studios engage in telling stories of partial encounters with the planetary - the earthly forces and interdependent relations manifesting themselves in cities. This involves exploring practices of care in the urban realm as an interwoven web of ecologies, as well as developing an ethics of care for the multiple worlds emerging at the interstices of these ecologies. The studios will adopt the plural understanding of ecology proposed by Félix Guattari that recognizes that nature and culture are inseparable while care will be studied in relation to Tronto and Fisher's definition: 'a species activity that includes everything we do to maintain, continue, and repair our "worlds". Looking from this lens bringing ecologies and care together, MA in Urban Design studios will address the urgent challenge of learning to live together on the broken planet and creating equitable and just urban environments that care for the multiple worlds inhabiting it. Just Energy and Just Nature studios address structural changes that needs to take place in neighbourhoods and cities to draw resources and agency to communities in order to move away from extractive urbanisation processes (that are colonial, inherently unequal, and exploitative) to encourage regenerative urbanism (that is caring, ecological, and just).

By repeatedly emphasizing figures like Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, schools often leave out more contemporary and culturally diverse approaches, giving students an outdated or incomplete understanding of #architecture’s potential — and the ways that diverse knowledges have been erased by modern’s hegemony. Indeed, this narrow focus not only restricts their appreciation of global design but also discourages the exploration of new, context-driven ideas that better align with today’s architectural landscape." "Like any other historical movement, modernism was a product of its time, responding to the needs of post-war industrialization and urbanization. Its clean lines, #minimalist principles and #functionalist ideals made sense in an era focused on rapid rebuilding. But today’s architects face a different set of challenges — #sustainability, #climatechange and the need for #cultural sensitivity in a globalized world."

This summer 2024, I was honored to receive funding from the Rollins College Department of Art and Art History Award for Travel/Research Grant to enroll in the ARCH100: Architecture and Ideas Course offered through Penn State World Campus. Through this course, my understanding of architecture has evolved significantly. Initially, I described architecture as primarily a means of providing functional shelter and aesthetic beauty. However, through exploring various perspectives, I now see architecture as a multifaceted discipline that integrates several key ideas. Firstly, functionalism remains crucial, as architecture must effectively address practical needs, much like Le Corbusier’s concept of a house as a "machine for living." Aesthetic expression also plays a vital role, reflecting the artistic and sensory dimensions of buildings, a notion supported by Gottfried Semper’s idea that architecture is rooted in the arts and crafts.? Cultural and historical context is another important aspect, as buildings often embody the values and technological advancements of their time. This is evident in Viollet-le-Duc’s analysis of Gothic architecture. Additionally, sustainability has become a significant concern, with architects like Hassan Fathy demonstrating how traditional materials, such as mud brick, can be adapted to address modern environmental challenges. Innovation in materials and methods also contributes to the field, exemplified by Paul Williams' transformative work in Southern California. Comparing this refined understanding to my initial view, it’s clear that my perspective has broadened. While my original definition might have focused more on the basic functions and visual appeal of buildings, I now appreciate how architecture also engages with cultural contexts, technological progress, and sustainability. This more nuanced view highlights architecture as a dynamic and integral practice that intertwines practicality, artistic expression, historical relevance, and environmental consciousness. I am grateful to have taken this course that encouraged me to really think about topics to participate in weekly discussion posts, interacting with classmates with various opinions. We debated issues such as Pevsner's definition of what qualifies as "architecture," the types of dwellings that promote the most community interaction, and the differing views on design by Vitruvius, Alberti, and Perrault, particularly on the subjectivity of beauty, and more. As I search for graduate programs in architecture, this course has been a valuable introduction—one not currently offered at Rollins College.?

Title of the talk: An Architectural Insight into the Role of Personalisation of Homes and its Effects on Residents’ Psychological Well-being ? Abstract: This seminar presents interdisciplinary research exploring the importance of personalisation in the relationship between architectural design of homes and inhabitants’ psychological well-being. Although the research was largely undertaken before the lockdowns of the C19 pandemic, the research highlights the important role our homes play in our wellbeing, an understanding that was brought into sharp focus by our experiences of being locked down in our homes in 2020/21. The mixed-method study first investigates the existence of a link between personalisation and users’ association with home through a quantitative study (with 101 respondents), then explores the nature of this relationship through 13 qualitative interviews. The main findings of the study highlight the significance of personalisation in relation to the way people perceive their homes. A direct link was established between participants’ involvement in the transformation of their homes and their satisfaction with the residence, as well as their satisfaction with life in general. The findings underscore the need for embedding flexibility to support opportunities for personalisation and transformation of homes, as an architectural concept in the design of residential buildings, for improving the well-being of homeowners and renters. ? Bio: Rachel Sara is Oscar Naddermier Professor of Architecture at Birmingham City University, where she leads research in the Birmingham School of Architecture as College Academic Lead for Research Innovation and Enterprise. Her personal research expertise is in co-design, community participation and agency in the built environment, the way in which health and wellbeing can be affected by architecture; live project practice and pedagogy; and transdisciplinary architecture collaborations. She is an experienced research project lead and collaborator around community participation and co-creation, spatial agency, sustainable and restorative design and bio-materials innovation. Representing the College of Architecture on the world stage, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s (ACSA) “Timber in the City” recognizes UNL students with an Honorable Mention!?Andy Vo, Eli Melendez and Sara Lee were awarded the honor for their project entitled “Home Run.” “Home Run” is a collaborative project from the ARCH 411 Integrate studio taught by Michael Hamilton and David Hinsley. Project description: The “Home Run” project questions how we might re-purpose the existing Oakland Coliseum to promote community interaction through porosity and density. The stadium typology is challenged from transforming one program use into another. The CLT modular design creates a series of third spaces and micro urbanism that echoes the experience at a baseball game. At the field level, community focused programs are provided with areas left blank for future development intended to be programmed by the residents themselves to determine needs. TIMBER IN THE CITY 5: Urban Habitats Competition was designed to challenge students, working individually or in teams, to reimagine the boundaries of wood construction in the urban environment, leading to the transformation of our existing cities through constructing sustainable buildings made from renewable resources, offering expedient affordable construction, innovating with new and traditional wood materials, and designing healthy living and working environments.

"Through his five-decade career, Yamamoto has built numerous private homes, housing projects, schools, university campuses, civic buildings, museums and even a fire station. His works often incorporate terraces, courtyards and other outdoor spaces that can encourage interaction with the building's surroundings." Part of the Jury's citation: "Yamamoto suggests rather than imposes this shared dimension through understated, yet precise architectural interventions. By including spaces for common activities within, in addition to and even regardless of the main function of his buildings, he allows these to integrate into the quotidian life of the community, instead of being only experienced in exceptional circumstances. The two departments for the students and researchers to work together in the Future University, Hakodate (2000), or the transparent louvred glass facade to expose the inner workings of the department in the Hiroshima Fire Station (2000) both exemplify his belief in the concept of transparency as a reflection of the functionality and accessibility of the space for users and viewers alike. As a young architect born in China and trained in Japan, he felt the urgency to complete his own education with a real understanding of the 'other than the self.' He extensively travelled not (primarily) to visit renowned monuments, but rather to experience at first hand the culture and everyday life of communities on other continents. From North to South America, across the Mediterranean to the Middle East and Asia, Yamamoto has investigated the roots and history of community life that he might bring his own contribution to the modernization of the contemporary city through architecture. For him a building has a public function even when it is private. Riken Yamamoto is not an architecture historian, yet he learns from the past as well as from different cultures. As an architect, he does not copy from the past, rather he adapts, re-uses and evolves, showing that fundamentals persist in their relevance. Yamamoto has expanded the toolbox of the profession towards both the past and the future to be able to give each time, in very different modes and at very different scales, the most pertinent response to the challenges of both the built environment and of collective living. For creating awareness in the community in what is the responsibility of the social demand, for questioning the discipline of architecture to calibrate each individual architectural response, and above all for reminding us that in architecture, as in democracy, spaces must be created by the resolve of the people, Riken Yamamoto is named the 2024 Pritzker Prize Laureate."

We recently paid a visit to one of our sites, a busy construction site where a double-story student accommodation is taking shape. As we stepped through the gates, the grandeur of the space unfolded before us. The airy corridors, spacious common areas, and cozy study nooks whispered promises of vibrant student life. The rooms, like blank canvases, invited contemplation. We imagined the laughter of future residents echoing off the walls, the soft glow of desk lamps illuminating late-night study sessions, and the rhythmic hum of creativity filling the air. But it wasn’t just about the present; it was about the future. As architects, we know that every line drawn, every beam placed, carries the weight of possibility. We thought about the students who would call this place home, their dreams, and the memories they’d create within these walls. And so, we began to plan—not just for the blueprint but for the stories yet to unfold. We considered flexibility, adaptability, and the potential for deviations. How could we design spaces that would evolve gracefully with time? How could we ensure that future changes seamlessly integrated with the existing structure? As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the construction site, we left with a sense of purpose.
