Students complete their degrees more smoothly, institutions align programs and increase enrollment, and the state gains a more educated workforce, driving economic growth and innovation. This is a helpful guide when program planning STEM experiences. This Women in Construction Week, we're shining a spotlight on the amazing women who are electrifying the construction industry! Only 2% of all the?electricians?in the United States are?women. To meet its clean energy goals, the U.S. will need more electricians than it has today — by some estimates, about a million more in the next 10 years. Women are a largely untapped pool of potential candidates. Explore apprenticeship programs:?These programs offer hands-on training and classroom learning to prepare you for a successful career. On #nationalengineeringday the 1851 Trust, Athena Pathway, and Cobham-Ultra are thrilled to announce the results of their recent STEM Roadshow in UK schools, with an exciting impact report revealing that?98% of students?who attended have a newfound interest in STEM careers!??? This initiative shows how much potential we have to tackle the UK’s STEM skills shortage—which could cost the economy?￡120 billion by 2030. Through engaging and interactive experiences, students were inspired by real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and math, gaining skills that align with the UK’s goals for economic growth and climate sustainability. Olympic gold medallist Hannah Mills OBE, with the help of the 1851 Trust, led the STEM Roadshow across London, York, Southampton, and Oxford. By using high-performance sports to challenge stereotypes and introduce STEM in an inspiring context, these events reached over 500 students, setting the stage for a diverse, skilled workforce ready to innovate for a sustainable future. But to scale this impact,?we need government support! We’re calling on the UK government and the Industrial Strategy Advisory Council to back initiatives like this and foster partnerships between the private sector and educators to continue inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers. We are proud that our university is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, and we are committed to expanding access to higher education and providing resources to ensure students succeed. During HSI week we celebrate the vital role these institutions play in educating the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. #HSIsWeek Some Fast Facts:? Hispanic students earned one out of four (25.9%) associate degrees conferred in 2021, compared to 13.2% in 2011.? In the fall of 2022, 3.2 million Hispanic undergraduate students were enrolled in nonprofit postsecondary institutions.? The percent of STEM degrees conferred to Hispanic students rose from 9.2% to 15.6% between 2009 and 2022.? This week we encourage SDSU to raise awareness, highlight the contributions made by HSIs on a local, national and international scale, build and promote campus-community partnerships to address various issues impacting the Hispanic/Latine community, and renew your commitment to helping SDSU honor its designation as an HSI.?#SDSU #HSI

Ranchers and Astronauts... Athletes and Bakers.... Engineers and Educators ..what ties them all together? #STEM Education. Providing access to #stemeducation programs at an early age can change the narrative for rural communities. Typically, rural communities face unique challenges in accessing quality STEM education due to limited resources, geographic isolation, and a lack of exposure to STEM opportunities. However, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM Center programs are fostering a strong connection between rural communities and STEM education. This is essential for promoting economic development, bridging the digital divide, and empowering the next generation with the skills needed for success in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The Ripken Foundation's focus on community engagement, mentorship, and partnerships with local industries plays a pivotal role in nurturing STEM interest and proficiency among rural youth, that ultimately contributes to the progress and prosperity of students and their communities.

Good morning from Forward Summit East! I appreciate this conference in starting with the voices of youth. The youth on the panel this morning amplified facts and messages that form the foundation of the work we do at Indigenous Futures in Engineering. Youth living on-reserve statistically graduate from high school at much lower rates, making post-secondary attendance almost impossible. So many factors go into creating this outcome - the housing crisis fundamentally among them. This reality informs the foundation of our next big project at Smith Engineering, the First Nations STEM Futures Academy for on-reserve high school youth. The youth speakers also pointed out that statistically, women in STEM continue to be underrepresented, particularly in a field like Engineering. They also shared Engineers Canada 's research that indicates only 0.6% of engineering graduates identify as Indigenous. Imagine the intersectional disparity for Indigenous women in engineering? We make efforts in our STEM Indigenous Academics program to provide programming specifically for our female-identifying Indigenous students in STEM programs. It also makes me want to stand up and announce "BUT WE ARE HERE!". Might not be many of us at Forward Summit but within the next month, we have AISES National in the USA along with AISES Canada East, that we are hosting at Queen's.
