Czech Land Forces soldiers are gearing up for a different role than their standard ground air defense tasks. Instead, they will focus on Force Protection, safeguarding allied forces. To aid in this mission, they have undergone rigorous training with Iveco light armored vehicles (LMV) at Boletice. The soldiers underwent extensive training to familiarize themselves with the Iveco LMV, a tactical 4WD vehicle known for its versatility and protection capabilities. This training included off-road driving exercises, navigating through unpaved roads, mud, and snow. The new buys, approved Feb. 21 by the parliament’s defense commission, are part of a uptick in Italian military spending partly spurred by the Ukraine conflict. Italy has previously ordered 10 FREMM frigates; the latest orders, dubbed FREMM EVO, will take the fleet to 12. Italy has already taken delivery of eight vessels. The ninth and tenth vessels were under construction when they were sold to Egypt and have been replaced with new orders. The two FREMM EVO vessels, which will together cost €2 billion (U.S. $2.2 billion), will boast upgrades to their combat management systems and radar and electronic warfare suites as well as to the sonar, gun, communications and missile systems. The second green light from parliament was for Italy’s planned purchase of Leopard 2A8 tanks to replace its ageing Ariete tanks and make good on NATO commitments. The 14-year program will start with a two-year development effort to achieve what has been called an ‘Italianized’ Leopard, bringing in local firms to add systems to the German tank. Lorenzo Mariani, the co-director general of Italian defense firm Leonardo, told Defense News this month Italy will add its own, domestically-manufactured components, including a Leonardo-supplied electro-optical sensor, software-defined radio, command-and-control system and possibly a gun barrel. Between 2027 and 2037, assembly in Italy will occur with 132 main battle tanks produced to equip two tank regiments and 140 versions for other roles, including engineering. With multiyear logistics, training and munitions included, Italy expects the overall cost of the program to reach nearly €8.3 billion euros, according to documents supplied to parliament."

The F-14D “Super Tomcat” was the final variant introduced by Grumman in the late 1980’s. Similar to its predecessors, the most modern Tomcat featured F110-GE-400 engines. Additionally, the Super Tomcat was fitted with the Airborne Self Protection Jammer, the AN/APG-71 radar, Joint Tactical Information Distribution System and other enhancements. The F-14D also has the LANTIRN targeting system that enables delivery of an array of laser-guided bombs for precision strikes in air-to-ground combat missiles. As detailed by?Air and Space, “With its Fast Tactical Imagery (FTI) system the F-14 can transmit and receive targeting/reconnaissance imagery in-flight to provide time sensitive strike capability. This F-14D is also capable of carrying the Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS) providing in-theater tactical reconnaissance.” Perhaps most impressively, the F-14D could carry four joint attack munitions (JADM).

"On July 8, in Warsaw, Poland signed a significant contract for the delivery of several dozen #Rosomak wheeled armored personnel carriers integrated with #ZSSW-30 remote-controlled turret systems. (...) The ZSSW-30 turret system was developed through a collaborative effort between Huta Stalowa Wola S.A./HSW S.A. and WB GROUP, resulting in a prototype and technical documentation. The system is designed for the destruction of armored targets, enemy fortifications, and providing fire support during combat operations. The turret’s electro-optical systems enable operations in various weather conditions and during both day and night. One of the standout features of the ZSSW-30 system is its ability for the commander and the weapon operator to independently observe, detect, identify, and track land and air targets using the autotracker function. Elbit Systems’ follow-on contract to supply Iron Fist Active Protection Systems (APS) for the U.S. Army’s Bradley M2A4E1 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) highlights the importance of advanced defense technologies in countering modern anti-tank threats like rockets, guided missiles, drones, and loitering munitions. By using radar and electro-optics to detect and intercept incoming attacks, the Iron Fist APS enhances vehicle survivability across both open and urban environments, contributing significantly to the modernization and resilience of U.S. armored forces.

I have mixed feelings about whether the Army's drone and counter-drone capabilities should be grouped together, as proposed by a House Armed Services Committee (HASC) subcommittee and included in the Department's Replicator initiative. Combining these capabilities seems to blur the lines between two distinct capabilities. The Aviation branch and Air Defense Artillery branch are separate branches. I believe it is Infantry branch, not the Armor branch, that is the proponent for anti-armor crew served weapons. Historically, the Department has differentiated between offensive and defensive weapon systems. Yet now, we're merging UAS and c-UAS ? While I understand the rationale behind lumping UAS and c-UAS together, especially in the context of securing scarce funding, I'm not sure it's the best long-term solution. We are setting up these capabilities to compete against each other for funding and resources. However, c-UAS should be competing with air defense and other force protection priorities, while offensive and scout drones should be competing for resources against other offensive weapon systems. DARPA: tanks of the future will rely on technology instead of armor Typically, the main means of protecting tanks and other ground military equipment is multi-layer armor, but in the end such equipment turns out to be relatively slow in real combat conditions, and therefore not effective enough. Since the world is constantly developing new types of weapons designed to easily make holes even in the multi-layered armor of tanks, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to find a suitable way to develop new, faster and more mobile military combat vehicles whose safety will not rely on the actual armor of these vehicles. Instead, through DARPA's Ground X-Vehicle Technology (GXV-T) competition, the agency wants to find ideas for how to create a combat vehicle that relies on technology for defense. The main task and question of the competition is how to create a high-tech combat vehicle that can not rely on its armor, but rather be able to avoid a direct blow from the enemy. Among the terms of reference for the development of ideas also include reducing the number of tank crew members by at least half, as well as the creation of military equipment that, being at least twice as fast as the existing one, will be able to avoid direct collisions with the enemy. The new equipment must be ready to work in a variety of environmental conditions, which would increase the chances of avoiding detection by the enemy. The Ground X-Vehicle Technology (GXV-T) competition will take place over the next 24 months, after which DARPA will select the most suitable version of the future tank in every sense, award an award to the winner, and perhaps even enter into a contract with him. This is a well written article...unfortunately it is not good news for the future of combat helicopters. The battlefield has evolved so much...and like all other technology the change curve is increasingly steeper. How can you start a multi-billion dollar weapons design program when you don't have a clue what the battle environment will be like when the system finally enters the fray? Of course this has always been an issue, but the changes happen a lot faster now. Unmanned vehicles...aerial, naval and land-based...are inevitable. As in the past, the art of war has much to teach civilian industry. It is less and less feasible to invest in huge, costly development projects with long lead times. Yet, sometimes they do pay off...like ChatGPT and its ilk. At the same time, Sam Altman is reportedly looking for an incredible 7 trillion dollars in capital investment to create AI infrastructure.
