With great sadness we are sharing the news of the passing of our colleague, Jerry Muhindo Kavali, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He died from the gunshot wound he suffered while at the MSF base in Masisi town. We stand by his family in this difficult time. We also want to remind the warring parties that even wars have rules. Jerry was a much-loved colleague. He was known for his constant smile, his dedication, his kindness and his unwavering commitment to MSF. Jerry had been with us since 2014. The whole MSF family is in mourning today. We also feel anger, as his tragic death comes against a backdrop of increasing violence in and around health and humanitarian facilities in eastern DRC. 2 周This is devastating and yet another stark reminder of the harsh reality humanitarian workers face in conflict zones like DRC. Jerry was shot at the MSF base in Masisi town—a place meant for saving lives, not taking them. I can’t help but think of my former colleagues, those who continue to do God’s work in the middle of this madness in the country, risking not just their own lives but also the safety of their loved ones. And now, as if the dangers on the ground weren’t enough, the freeze on U.S. foreign aid is only making their struggle even more unbearable—cutting off lifelines when they are needed most. Jerry’s death is a tragedy, and it’s infuriating. Even wars have rules. Those risking everything to provide care should never become targets. Rest in peace, Jerry. Your service won’t be forgotten. ??
