Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates are highest in low- and middle-income countries, reflecting gaps in access to HPV vaccines, screening, and treatment services -- and further influenced by social and economic challenges. At MSD, we are dedicated to bridging these gaps and making a tangible impact, as we work to ensure that communities in the EEMEA region are able to prevent and combat cervical cancer.? Let’s talk cervix. (Yep, we went there.) January is Cervical Health Awareness Month—a perfect reminder to prioritize prevention. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early, thanks to regular screenings and the HPV vaccine. There are over 150 types of HPV, but fewer than 10 types actually lead to cancer. HPV 16, HPV 18, HPV 31, HPV 33, and HPV 42 are examples of high-risk HPV types. Many clear the virus on their own without any symptoms, but high-risk strains can cause cell changes leading to cancer. #HPVvax

On #CervicalCancer Elimination Day of Action, we are proud to spotlight a Bevan Exemplar Cohort 8 project by Helen Munro (Hywel Dda University Health Board), Debbie Harvey (Life Sciences Hub Wales), and Zoe Couzens (Public Health Wales). Their initiative explored HPV self-sampling at home—a convenient option that could increase cervical screening uptake and improve outcomes. Results showed that 64% of participants preferred HPV self-sampling, highlighting its potential to save NHS resources and patient time while addressing barriers to screening.
