At the Department of Engineering Technology & Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M University capstone presentations, I saw students making sales teams more efficient, customer experience improvements, specific supply chain processes more efficient, leadership communication processes work to change culture and to the tune of millions of dollars of savings or revenue depending on the problem. If you’re not recruiting here, channel the Julia Roberts Pretty Woman scene where she points out that while the salesperson is dependent on sales, she took a hard pass on what could have been her biggest sale. It definitely would have put her over her numbers on the day, week, month, year? What problem solutions are you taking a hard pass on solving? Why? What’s holding you back? DO YOU KNOW THE REAL "REAL MCCOY"? Engineer and inventor, Elijah McCoy was born May 2nd, 1844, in Colchester, Ontario. His parents were fugitives who had escaped enslavement in Kentucky with help from the Underground Railroad network. After becoming a certified mechanical engineer at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Elijah relocated to Michigan in 1870. He was only able to find menial work for the Michigan Central Railroad but toiled tirelessly on improvements and inventions in his spare time. In 1872, McCoy patented an automatic lubricator for steam engines which became so popular that folks would ask for it by name to avoid imitations. This is most likely where the phrase “the real McCoy” originated. Elijah continued creating and enhancing railroad equipment until his death in 1929, obtaining nearly 60 patents along the way. In her video, "The Mind of the Engineer," Shalene Smith provides a unique perspective on the life of an engineer. Growing up with three engineer brothers, Smith's upbringing instilled in her a different way of thinking that is evident in her work today. As an engineer, you begin to view everyday objects such as park equipment and toys in a completely different way. Nassau Engineering Legend We commemorate William "Bill" Ward, the respected owner of Nassau Engineering, who has left us this weekend. As a mentor and leader, Bill's life was marked by profound kindness, generosity, and a significant professional impact on those fortunate enough to have worked with him. In my early twenties, my professional journey intertwined with Bill's when I started at Nassau Engineering. Bill was more than a supervisor; he was a guiding force who believed deeply in nurturing potential. His ethos was not just about business; it was about building a supportive community, evident from how he assisted me during the nascent stages of my entrepreneurial venture. Without expecting immediate compensation, he provided the resources essential for overcoming early challenges, which profoundly shaped my career trajectory. Bill's leadership extended beyond Nassau Engineering. His principles and work ethic were mirrored at S&B Engineers and Constructors, where I later joined. The seamless transition I experienced can be attributed to the congruent values between the two organizations, a testament to Bill’s lasting influence on industry standards. While serving as a project manager for LyondellBasell, I frequently encountered peers who held Nassau Engineering in high regard. The culture and standards set by Bill's leadership were often highlighted as exemplary, setting benchmarks for what excellence in our field should resemble. These standards are a legacy that continues to influence and inspire. Bill's approach to mentorship and his personal virtues never wavered, even as he faced significant health challenges. His involvement in my patent work, despite his illness, exemplified his unwavering commitment to support and mentorship. Bill’s demeanor—gentle and soft-spoken, coupled with an honest and loving nature—embodied the spirit of a true Texan and a devoted father. As we honor his memory, let us remember Bill not just for his professional achievements but for the compassionate and upright man that he was.
