I've written before on this: Many startups delay starting the patent process mostly because of the limit in their budget, the complexity of the patent process, and the COST toward them. This I figured out early on in my career as a tech. founder. What I did not expect, was for startups to go through the process, obtain 1 or 2 patents and call it a day BEFORE their product even reaches the market. A granted patent is great, but a granted patent plus a pending patent IS BETTER! It gives you, the inventor, maneuverability. Additionally, those narrow patents we find in many cases are directly related to the startups inability to fund higher cost services, for a substantially descriptive and well written patent application. This month I’ve seen several startups pitch to investors. I attended the NY Venture Summit youngStartup Ventures and will be at the Ohio VC Summit in two weeks! My thoughts on today's startup world surround: research. Innovation is the backbone of the American economy. We are all fighting to create a living for ourselves or create jobs for those around us. No matter what industry you are in, and no matter what goals you have in mind for your business, research is one of the first steps. What do you need to research? Here are a few key areas of research: 1. Competitors: What products/services do they offer? What is their business model? How do they reach customers? Price Points? Specific target markets? How does your solution fit into the market? 2. Customers: Do they even want your new solution? What is their pain points? What are they using today? How much do they pay? What are their complaints about what they are using? Where are they located and where can you access them? 3. Regulations: The worse thing to do is go into a business where you don't understand the regulation behind it. Regulation is the equivalent to liability. Understanding the regulation is key to your success and drafting a strategy to bringing your product to market. 4. Business development: How much capital will it take to launch? Can you bootstrap or will you need an investor? Is the addressable market large or limited? How long until you make a sale? How long does it take to make a sale? What is the timeframe to enter the market? What are the major hurdles? Who and what will you need to make your solution/product happen?
