It was my very first mammogram. I had forgotten to get a mammogram at age 40. And it was like a Wednesday or a Thursday. And I remember them saying it takes a few days to read the results, but we'll call you on Monday. My phone rang at 9:01 on Monday morning. And, you know, the nurse said, oh, I'm sorry to tell you, you have cancer. I didn't have any sense of how much cancer was just about to take over my life. I mean, it was like a whirlwind. You're kind of going to shell shock because you just don't even know what's happening. The reason that there is more hope for breast cancer now than ever is. Science. So when Bridget came and met with me, we talked about the fact that the goal of treatment was curative intent. Our goal was to make the cancer disappear. She had a very aggressive cancer. And on the study, the study at that time was using novel immunotherapy in addition to chemotherapy. After going through all of the procedures for it, she decided to participate in this study at that time, during the care of breast cancer actually. You couldn't get immunotherapy outside of a clinical trial for breast cancer. Would we have accomplished is that we have used genetic testing to improve upon nature. The information that we need to get Bridget and others the treatments that they need is already contained in the information that the breast cancer cells carry with them in their DNA. That's why we were able to help bridge it in a way that would be impossible five years ago, an unthinkable 50 years ago. Our breast cancer teams, really passionate about the study. All of us are really integral into understanding the science and enhancing the care. And it's a complex trial, so it's bringing in imaging, but it's also looking at pathologic features, so characteristics of the cancer itself. And based on that, using a platform called Mammaprint, we're able to tailor people's therapy to what we think they're going to respond best to. So she went on the clinical trial and happened to be enrolled on an arm that included chemo plus immunotherapy and with that had a complete response and is doing great. So I have the Braca 2 gene and actually I'm very thankful that I was able to do that genetic testing and that they've come so far with the genetic testing because I mean, really, I was destined to get breast cancer. I never would have known this. What's remarkable about Doctor Blaise and her team is that. They have pioneered the supportive care and survivorship care for people like Bridget. That relationship that you share with the patient is a gift. For one, treating their cancer and helping them live OK, but 2, giving them hope. I think that that is a really essential part of my care when I take care of patients. When I hit the five year mark last October, I decided let's celebrate and I went to Hawaii. For a week and swam in the ocean every single day and just had a blast with some friends and it was just, yeah, it feels fantastic. That's the fun part of being here is being able to offer novel treatments that aren't available somewhere else. And at the same time really thinking, how do we get. Information along the way to better the care for people in the future. I try not to sweat the small stuff so much anymore, you know? I think it's just important to be happy and love the people around you and take the trip.
