Take Action! Protect the Nolichucky River - urge CSX to rebuild responsibly without damaging public lands: https://lnkd.in/ep-Pzncj Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, CSX is rebuilding its railroad through the Nolichucky Gorge, but their methods are causing irreparable harm to this ecologically rich and economically vital river. Instead of hauling in necessary materials, CSX is mining rock directly from the Nolichucky riverbed—a choice that threatens wildlife habitat, water quality, and the thriving outdoor recreation industry that East Tennessee and Western North Carolina communities rely on. Act now to protect the Nolichucky River!

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest category 5 hurricane to ever develop in the Atlantic Ocean, has caused immense destruction on Union Island in the Caribbean. 90% of homes there have been severely damaged or destroyed. Over the coming days, Beryl is predicted to continue destroying other islands across the Caribbean. ? ? The Union Island Environmental Alliance, a local partner of Fauna & Flora and @rewild, has lost everything—their entire staff have lost their homes and their office headquarters, and all the equipment needed to conduct their work has been destroyed.? This island is home to the entire global population of the already critically endangered Union Island gecko. We don’t yet know how bad the damage to their habitat is, but the building for the project set up to protect them has been flattened. It’s critical that we now do what we can to help our Caribbean partners to rebuild their lives and livelihoods and rescue this important conservation programme.? Please support and share if you can: https://lnkd.in/eSDgWjka #HurricaneBeryl #UnionIsland #Caribbean #ClimateChange

Climate change is here and its impacts are devastating. The earliest category five storm on record has ripped through Union Island and our partners, the Union Island Environmental Alliance, have lost everything.?? ? My thoughts are with all our partners and colleagues impacted. We need urgent global action on climate now. #HurricaneBeryl #ClimateChange

?? In Florida, a 6-mile highway used for hurricane evacuations is threatened by waves, rising tides, and severe storms. The Apalachee Regional Planning Council found that using 20 acres of engineered oyster reefs and up to 30 acres of salt marshes works better than artificial seawalls or concrete blocks. Natural habitats – like oyster reefs and salt marshes – can fix themselves from wave damage. These nature-based solutions also reduce the wave impacts, helping the environment, restoring oyster fisheries, and strengthening the shoreline. Hurricane Helene rocked the Southeast in late September, bringing devastating floods to many regions. Parts of Atlanta, a member of the Cities for Smart Surfaces, were hit hard, but thanks to Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), some neighborhoods were spared the worst. ?? Rodney Cook Sr. Park and Old Fourth Ward Park—designed as stormwater retention ponds—held up under the storm, protecting nearby homes from severe flooding. Developed with support from our coalition partner, Trust for Public Land, these parks are a prime example of how investing in GSI can build climate resilience and benefit communities. ?? Check out this article to learn more about Atlanta's green Infrastructure: https://lnkd.in/gJzdrXdt

Please take a moment and read this Facebook post regarding the impact that Hurricane Helene has had on the water supply in affected regions. Most do not plan for or think about the 1st, second and 3rd order effects resulting from a sudden loss of access to running, clean water. Individuals in Florida's Big Bend area (Eastern Panhandle) are having to gather clean water from wells or other areas and transport them around, if they are lucky enough to have transportation. Otherwise it is being flown into areas by helicopter, like the Blue Ridge Mountains region in North Carolina. It is instances such as these, which will start increasing in intensity and frequency, that will increase the necessity for our humanitarian agencies (FEMA/Local Gov't/Military) to start utilizing more of the available, cutting-edge water filtration/atmospheric water harvesting technology from companies such as: Gyrene Engineering Management and Flotration Technologies LLC, just to name a couple. Also, with the power being cut out for an unknown amount of time (latest update), companies such as Pvilion can be used to deploy temporary living shelters with flexible solar panels and storage batteries to power emergency medical/relief centers without the need to compound air and ground asset logistical issues by increasing the fuel demand for gas generators. Thanks for reading my rant, this is a near and dear issue to me that needs to be addressed. Innovation can be applied to the humanitarian, domestic realm. We don't always need to invest everything into defense tech, let's hope the funding pathways open up in the future given recent events. https://lnkd.in/gaVutGAj

Sand Dumping Violation Warning. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene residents are asked to adhere to rules regarding post-storm surge sand dumping. The sand on private property must be handled differently than the sand on public property, and it cannot be returned directly to the shoreline. There are environmental considerations that govern sand sifting, decontamination, testing, placement, the removal of loose sand; as well as the disposal of sandbags. There are different compliance and environmental considerations for wet, dry, and used sand. Check your local government websites for cleanup updates. And always, please use caution because debris, including nails or sharp objects, can be mixed in with the sand. ?

As we navigate another intense hurricane season, the impact of #climatechange on our coastal areas is more evident than ever.??? ? For centuries, natural barriers like mangroves, coral reefs, and marshes have been our frontline defenders against coastal threats. Now, these vital ecosystems are under increasing pressure and risk. ? Restoring and #protecting them is essential if we want to maintain their protective benefits for future generations. ? Join us for an insightful #masterclass with Professor Mike Beck, AXA Research Fund Chair in Coastal Resilience at University of California, Santa Cruz, as he explores the importance of preserving these natural defenses and the strategies to do so. ? Plastic in our oceans is a major threat to animals, fish stocks, and the environment. Lost fishing gear, also known as ghost gear, is a significant contributor to marine pollution. Eastern Canada was heavily impacted by this issue when #HurricaneFiona touched down in September 2022. On this #EarthDay, Minister Lebouthillier has announced the results of the $30 million Hurricane Fiona Ghost Gear Fund. Fund recipients retrieved over 22,205 units, or 695 tonnes, of lost gear, as well as 453 km worth of rope in areas hardest hit by the hurricane. These efforts are crucial in keeping plastics and fishing gear debris out of our waters. Learn more: https://ow.ly/y4jk50RlbrE
