Unlocking the Communication Barrier for Children with Autism The iPad For Kids Program has revolutionized the way we help children on the spectrum communicate. The intuitive iPad apps for autism provide a voice for those who are nonverbal. These apps offer a simple way for children to combine words and symbols to create sentences with images. And with their mobility, these iPads can be used anywhere. That's why ASDF has donated iPads to individuals and special education classrooms to help nonverbal autistic children communicate and learn. Make a difference today and help unlock the communication barrier for children by donating to our cause. Embracing acceptance acknowledges the uniqueness of both you and me, and that's what makes us both incredibly awesome. During Autism Acceptance Month, we are happy to highlight Variety - The Children's Charity of BC for funding private autism and psychoeducational assessments. They have helped 100s of children to access this government support by funding a private autism assessment. Here's a startling fact: In BC, a confirmed autism diagnosis for children under 6 years old unlocks a substantial $22,000 per year of government funding for essential therapies and resources. However, this funding plummets to a mere $6,000 after the child turns 6. Given the public health system's assessment wait time of 2 to 3 years, it's clear that immediate action is needed. That's why BC Children's Charity funds private autism assessments for children aged 4 and under, maximizing the benefits of early intervention. We are incredibly proud that the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC) text-to-donate platform is used to raise funds for this incredible Canadian Charity. Elopement, a term used to describe wandering or bolting away from a safe environment, is a significant concern for individuals with Autism. Understanding elopement in individuals with autism is essential for implementing effective prevention strategies and providing appropriate support. By acknowledging the challenges, risk factors, and impact of elopement on individuals and their families, we can work towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment for autistic individuals. Collaborative efforts, research-driven interventions, and empathy can empower us to address this issue with greater sensitivity and effectiveness. I never intended to be a Founder. ? I became interested in autism when I was in high school at North Toronto Collegiate Institute. There, I had the unexpected good fortune of getting to know a fellow student who had autism. She was non-vocal, and behaved differently than anyone I had ever met. I became quite curious about autism (the prevalence at the time was low, around 13 per 10,000 people). I? found myself reading everything I could find about it. Being in the 90’s - yup, before the internet ?? - I would take the TTC to Geneva Centre for Autism and sign out books and VHS videos from their resource library.? Undoubtedly, this early experience set me on my career path, and for that, I am very grateful.?? ???? My curiosity took me on a cross-border journey, when I got my first “real” job at The New England Center for Children, which also had a partnership with Northeastern University’s Master’s in ABA program. This was an incredible opportunity to study while gaining applied experience.? I have tried to replicate that learning experience here at TACT for graduate students who want to/need to work while pursuing their academic goals. ?? My love of research is what ultimately drew me to entering the PhD program at Columbia University. During my time there, I worked in the CABAS lab schools, with the most amazing mentors. I learned so much about systems and mentorship there, and that has definitely shaped my work here at TACT. ???? It was my family that brought me back to Canada in 2018. In retrospect, it was good timing, just ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic. It took me some time to understand how I would fit in professionally here. Thank goodness for the Ontario Association for Behaviour Analysis (ONTABA), and for my time serving on the board of directors. ?? The system of care in Canada for children with autism is complicated at best. I won’t say it’s broken (that’s too permanent), but it’s pretty bent.? It took me a while to accept the current reality of this system. I also believe it can change. ?? Our mission at TACT is to provide timely and equitable access to evidence-based treatment.? We offer solutions for families who are looking for help, and we’re giving kids a chance to reach their full potential. We’re also helping to train aspiring behavior analysts and educators, who want to make a meaningful difference. Since 2019, we have grown slowly and steadily, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team we have built and the work we are doing. I never intended to be a Founder. But I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
I'm raising awareness and support for TACT | The Autism Centre of Toronto. Five years ago, I took this leap because I believed that we could fill a huge need in Toronto. And we're doing it! But we can't do it without community support. If you're able, please donate and/or share our story so we can continue to give these amazing kids what they need. Thank you ?? https://lnkd.in/gChPjPDu

I’m going to be transparent, we as an organization have struggled to raise money to support our programming. We were unable to our “Back to School” free shoes for the kiddos. We also did not hold our “Autism Cut-A-Thon” Fall edition. We give parents and kiddos free haircuts and come together as a community. We are continuing our work helping parents with resources and supporting in the transition to becoming a parent of an autistic child. We yield 4-5 calls a week from parents which are a majority of success. But, the community aspect is crucial. Isolation is the #1 cause of depression with our parents. Getting out to our events gives them the sense of belonging. We share hugs and tears. Most importantly, we are together as a community of autistic families. This campaign runs through December, but we are getting started early! We have to secure a photographer and a Santa. Decorations and other supplies to make this a huge event. It will take place December 7th. More details to follow. This event is FREE to our families. Our goal is to have 100 families come and get to enjoy the season as other typical families will have the opportunity to experience. Our goal is to obtain a $10 donation from a 1000 supporters. We know money is uncertain for some, but there are other options for you to help. If you decide to support, we THANK YOU! Also share with others and start your own campaign. Our circle is not a big as we would love, so we need your help. This goal will support our Santa event, but also many of Jacob’s Audible Spring events. Everyone who knows me knows I’m “ALL IN” with Jacob’s Audible. I will not stop advocating for our autistic community. We want to do more. These families need help. #truthautism #autismSanta https://lnkd.in/eW6ciY_r

24 days to go to the Big Give Christmas Challenge This year we are taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, raising funds to provide free, early intervention, life-transforming, intensive services to Autistic children and their families aged 0-4, and free online workshop-style support for parents/carers of Autistic children aged 5- 12 years This year we have seen a significant increase in the number of families contacting us, often feeling frustrated, angry, and sometimes alone unable to find someone to listen. You can hear from parents themselves in this video https://lnkd.in/eBURBjFh, as well as how the funds we are raising will be spent. At Transforming Autism, we don’t want to turn anyone away, this is why we have set ourselves an ambitious target of raising £25,000 to provide face-to-face and online support to those who need it. We need your help. You too can support Autistic children and their families by donating and the great news is when you donate between the 3rd and 10th of December every £ you donate will be match funded by supporters of our charity. Don't worry we will remind you nearer the time - as we count down to this big week for us and our families. #TransformingAutism #BigGiveFundraiser #EarlySigns #AutismFamilySupport #EarlyAutismIntervention
