As Rabbi Hillel would say, “if I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I?” Instead of trying to convince people to do something purely for someone else, organizers in the DART network train grassroots leaders to do what Rabbi Hillel alludes to: how to be both for themselves and for others. Organizers do this through building deep relationships with people to help them see how standing up for their own interest is interwoven with standing up for the interest of their community as a whole. By guiding individuals through discovering what it is that calls them to fight for justice, organizers help people articulate what they value or need – and how that relates to the needs of the community. Through doing so, they invite people to be in solidarity towards creating the kind of community that we all want: to be both for themselves and for others in the pursuit of justice. Such a grossly out-of-touch and shamefully ignorant comment by Doug Ford. The vulnerable folks in our communities are indelibly harmed by this sort of biased judgement and assumption. Many Canadians who have jobs are also experiencing homelessness or precarious/transient housing. We must move past the self-righteous concept of poverty, mental illness, and substance poisoning being demonstrative of a lack of moral courage or the outward display of failed determination and laziness. Was the American Civil War really fought for freedom of slaves? The war was about slavery and slavery was business. The civil war was just another tactic that Americans use to " take care of business." Slavery was over and now ruled illegal, but many Americans didn't see it that way. Slave masters had spent many years breeding humans and indoctrinating them with a slave mentality so they would be good slaves; they had even gone through the trouble of having them classified as animals legally---- they weren't about to pay slaves (their animals) to work! Out fore parents found themselves out of work------and we're still the most unemployed! Slaves were in worse shape economically. Recently freed slaves survive on the thread of commerce and having lost their value as slaves, they were no longer a valuable commodity. Freed slaves had no idea about how to function as an American citizens. In our march toward freedom, Dr. Martin Luther King not only had the courage to take a stand against injustice, he had the courage to lead Descendants of American Slaves into the Civil Rights movement. He knew slaves weren't bred to prosper, yet he had the courage to direct us toward the " economic battle field." That's when is was assassinated.
