Approximately 1.8 million New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes, putting them at risk for serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations. In New York City alone, diabetes was the fourth leading cause of death overall and the fourth leading cause of death among non-Hispanic Black adults in 2020. The overall obesity rate among adult New Yorkers is 25%, with even higher rates in Central Brooklyn neighborhoods that have large immigrant populations. This #AmericanDiabetesMonth, we celebrate the efforts of our grantee partners, such as CAMBA Inc., and their Brooklyn Drive Down Diabetes program. They provide essential education, prevention, and treatment services aimed at reducing the incidence of this chronic disease and helping New Yorkers with diabetes live longer, healthier lives. New EHF Survey Reveals Texas' Diabetes Crisis WATCH NOW: A new statewide survey from Episcopal Health Foundation shows that two-thirds of Texans see type-2 diabetes as a major problem and nearly half live in households affected by diabetes or prediabetes. “Texas is experiencing a diabetes crisis, yet nine out of 10 cases of type-2 diabetes are preventable, says EHF's Ann Barnes, MD, MPH. The findings are a call to action to change the conversation in Texas to diabetes PREVENTION. Diabetes isn’t just a medical issue; it’s primarily shaped by non-medical factors, from healthy food access to affordable health care. More than 70% of diabetes-affected households in Texas say they delay care due to cost showing that the need for accessible, preventive care has never been clearer. EHF is dedicated to expanding diabetes prevention and addressing non-medical factors through community partnerships and innovative #HealthNotJustHealthCare solutions. Check out the KPRC news coverage from health reporter Haley Hernandez during #DiabetesAwarenessMonth. Explore the survey results and EHF’s prevention efforts here: https://lnkd.in/dmPuZ_d2

This #ObesityCareWeek, let's unite to challenge the stigma and push for compassionate, evidence-based care for those living with obesity. Obesity is not a choice but a chronic disease influenced by a complex interplay of genetics, environment, and social factors. It's time we recognize the importance of addressing obesity with the same urgency and empathy we afford other chronic diseases. By signing the pledge, we acknowledge the five undeniable principles of obesity care: acknowledging obesity as a chronic disease, understanding its complex biology, recognizing its early impact on health, advocating for effective treatments, and fighting weight bias, stigma, and discrimination. Let's pledge to create a society that respects and understands the complexities of obesity, values science-based care, and supports everyone's journey towards better health. Join me in making a difference. #EndWeightBias #HealthForAll #ScienceBasedCare For more information and to take action, visit https://lnkd.in/ecuHjyVs.

World Diabetes Day 2024: "Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps" Today, on November 14th, we commemorate World Diabetes Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes and advocating for better prevention, diagnosis, and management of the condition. This year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” underscores our commitment to reducing the risk of diabetes and ensuring that all people diagnosed with diabetes have access to equitable, comprehensive, affordable, and quality treatment and care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people with diabetes has increased four-fold over the past three decades, with over 800 million adults currently living with the condition. This alarming rise highlights the urgent need for stronger global action to address both rising disease rates and widening treatment gaps, especially in low- and middle-income countries. At The Livingspring Medical Missions, we are dedicated to breaking down barriers to diabetes care and bridging gaps in treatment access. We call on policymakers, healthcare providers, and the global community to join us in this effort to create a healthier, more equitable future for all those affected by diabetes. Let’s work together to spread knowledge, raise awareness, and create lasting change. ?? #WorldDiabetesDay #BreakingBarriers #BridgingGaps #DiabetesCare #GlobalHealth

On World Diabetes Day 2024, we come together with the powerful theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps,” to address the challenges faced by millions affected by diabetes worldwide. This year, we focus on removing obstacles that prevent people from accessing essential care, understanding their condition, and finding supportive communities. Diabetes is a complex disease that goes beyond numbers and medication; it affects lives in deeply personal ways. "Breaking Barriers" reminds us of the obstacles many face, from stigma and misinformation to limited access to healthcare, especially in underserved regions. Meanwhile, "Bridging Gaps" is our call to action to close these divides—whether through expanding healthcare services, fostering connections among individuals and healthcare providers, or promoting innovative technologies and lifestyle interventions that empower those living with diabetes. As we observe World Diabetes Day, let’s advocate for equity in diabetes care and inspire unity among healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. Together, we can foster an environment where everyone has the tools and support they need to live a full, healthy life with diabetes. #diabetes #worlddiabetesday #worlddiabetesday2024

I'm honored to lead a webinar on Health Disparities and the Tipping Point for Diabetes during the?American Diabetes Association?NY/NJ Research Week. Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the US, accounting for more than 73,000 mortalities annually. Almost 12% of the US population has diabetes, and the estimated annual direct and indirect cost of diagnosed diabetes exceeds $320 billion. While the science of #Diabetes prevention and management is evolving rapidly, thirty percent of diabetics remain undiagnosed and untreated. Diabetes is a US public health problem, but Black, Indigenous and People Of Color in the US have a 50% higher risk for diabetes due to exposure to a disproportionate burden of adverse social determinant driven risk factors and treatment barriers. I look forward to discussing?the intersecting roles and opportunities within society, the health industry, the adjacent accountable organizations and individuals, in driving more awareness and actionable?strategies for?reversing the diabetes epidemic. And by so doing, achieving equity in diabetes care. Join me on May 13th from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. ET for this important conversation.
