September is #SickleCellAwarenessMonth! Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), an inherited blood disorder that is more prevalent in individuals of African and Latinx/Hispanic descent, affects approximately 100,000 Americans. Every September, people living with sickle cell disease, their caregivers, advocates, healthcare providers, and others come together to bring awareness to the disease and dispel the myths and stigmas surrounding it. The month also brings attention to the ongoing need for research, better care practices, new treatments, and an eventual cure. Facts about sickle cell disease: ? SCD is the most common inherited blood disorder in U.S. ? There are approximately 2,000 babies born with SCD annually in the U.S. ? 1 out of every 365 Black or African American babies are born with sickle cell disease. ? 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American babies are born with sickle cell disease. ? About 1 in 13 Black or African American babies are born with sickle cell trait. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Instead of being round and flexible, the cells become rigid and shaped like a crescent or "sickle," causing blockages in blood flow and leading to severe pain, anemia, and other complications. Key Facts about Sickle Cell Disease Sickle Cell Disease primarily affects people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent. It is a lifelong condition that requires careful management and treatment. Early diagnosis through newborn screening and comprehensive care can greatly improve quality of life. #sicklecelldisease #sicklecellawareness #awareness #sicklecellawarenessmonth #blooddisorders

There is a sickle cell disease (SCD) myth which says that persons with SCD do not live past the age of 21. However, the most recent study (CDC/NCHS, 2013) implies that half of males born with SCD will survive to 78 years and half of females will survive to age 83 years. The New England Journal of Medicine states that the peak incidence of death among children with sickle cell anemia occur between 1 and 3 years of age, but this can to a large extent be prevented if newborns are screened and the prophylactic penicillin is administered early to infants with SCD. The prominent risk factors for death with persons with SCD are acute chest syndrome, renal failure, seizures, a base-line white-cell count above 15,000 cells per cubic millimeter, and a low level of fetal hemoglobin, but with more awareness and early detection, serious complications may be prevented as SCD patients can obtain information on how to manage the disease. #MondayHealthBurst #SCD #SickleCellAwarenessMonth

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin. This abnormality red blood cells to become rigid, sticky, and shaped like crescent moons or sickles, which can block blood flow and break apart easily leading to pain, infections, and other serious health complications. On June 19 every year, the global communities come together to observe the World Sickle Cell Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and supporting individuals and families affected by this genetic blood disorder. The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) invites everyone to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day with the inspiring theme, “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally.” This theme highlights the collective effort required to enhance the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) through improvements in care, research, and global awareness. Join us in the fight against sickle cell disease! Together, we can bring hope through progress. #WorldSickleCellDay #HopeThroughProgress #SickleCellAwareness #AdvancingSCDCare #HealthForAll #GlobalHealth #YoloHealth

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is responsible for 35% of deaths in women each year – more than ALL cancers combined. It can affect women of any age. Yet, CVD in women continues to be seriously understudied, under-recognised, under-diagnosed and under-treated. This is primarily the result of various misconceptions, including the widespread view that cardiovascular disease affects men more than it does women. On International Women's Day, WHF is addressing some of these misconceptions to empower women with a clearer understanding of their risk factors and to advocate for better recognition of CVD as the leading cause of death in women. The more women know about heart disease, the better their chance of beating it. https://lnkd.in/dmnHYGPg

Each March, we recognize #BleedingDisordersAwarenessMonth. According to the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month was established in 2016 to educate others about and spread awareness of inheritable (genetic) blood and #bleedingdisorders, like hemophilia, von Willebrand disease (VWD), rare factor disorders and more. In general, bleeding disorders are defined by the inability to form a proper blood clot. Blood clotting is an essential bodily function, as it helps to prevent excessive bleeding when an injury occurs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites that over 3.2 million Americans are affected by bleeding disorders. The most common bleeding disorder, VWD, occurs in 1% of the United States population. While all bleeding disorders are rare, we must still talk about them. At Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, many of our physicians are board-certified in hematology and provide expert care for those affected by blood and bleeding disorders across Florida. Sickle Cell Awareness Month is recognized in September, which aims to highlight the challenges faced by individuals living with this condition and promote research and support. Sickle Cell Disease affects hemoglobin in red blood cells, causing them to take on a sickle (crescent) shape, which can block blood flow. Symptoms include episodes of pain (crises), fatigue, anemia, and organ damage. Early diagnosis through newborn screening and proper medical care can improve quality of life. Bone marrow transplants are currently the only cure, though they are not an option for all patients. #TogetherWeFindAWay #PatriotHomeCare #CareRingHealth #SickleCellAwareness #SickleCellMatters #SickleCellWarrior #SickleCellDisease #SickleCellMonth #BreakTheSickleCycle #FightSickleCell #HopeForSickleCell #CureSickleCell #SickleCellSupport #SickleCellStrong #KnowYourSickleStatus

Sickle cell disease is not a one-size-fits-all condition. In today's video, we explore a fresh perspective on how to better classify it. Rather than viewing it as a monogenic blood disorder, it’s essential to recognise it as a multi-organ dysfunction, impacting nearly every system in the body. This shift in understanding could lead to better treatment strategies and care for those affected. Watch the full video to learn more about how we can redefine the way we approach sickle cell disease. World Sickle Cell Day is an annual observance dedicated to raising international awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and the challenges faced by patients and their families. Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to change from their normal round shape to a sickle or banana shape, primarily due to the presence of Haemoglobin S instead of the normal Haemoglobin A. This alteration leads to various health complications, including frequent infections, painful swelling of hands and feet, chronic fatigue, strokes, organ damage, and severe pain episodes known as sickle cell crises. Raising awareness on this day is crucial to educating the public about Sickle Cell Disease and advocating for improved healthcare access, research funding, and support systems for those affected. World Sickle Cell Day emphasizes the importance of compassion, education, and action in addressing the needs of people suffering from Sickle Cell Disease.
